Hello my dear  Fall 2014 Stylistics students!!!

Thank You and ..

In this post I would like to say "thank you" and "good-bye" "see you all next year" (at least I hope to) on my course of English Literature.

Thank you for attending my classes and getting ready for them. This course was not quite what I had expected it to be: It felt like you were not very active reading and commenting on each other's blogs. Maybe you waited for me to comment, I am sorry, but I chose not to thrust my opinion on you.

I believe my class was progress for some of you, Progress for others, and PROGRESS for  the rest.

Examination Questions

Which type of stylistics studies stylistic peculiarities of two or more languages? Which type of stylistics is the ‘stylistics of the writer’? What is the name of the scientist that divides stylistics into paradigmatic and syntagmatic? What do we call phonetic means, morphological forms, means of word-building, lexical, phraseological and syntactical forms, all of which function in the language for emotional or logical intensification of an utterance? What do we call ‘generative models’ used purposefully to intensify speech? Which SD shows the similarity of two basically different things without the word ‘like’? Which SD, a variety of metaphor, represents an inanimate object or an idea as having human characteristics, capable of thought, action or feeling? Which SD exaggerates the size of…

Week 13

Week 10

This week is devoted to syntactic stylistic means. Fill free to discuss the devices that seem not clear, or difficult, or interesting (there is a SD in this very sentence!). It is not necessary to write about all the syntactic stylistic means.

Deadline - April, 6

Week 6

This week you can blog about SDs, which have a comic effect: Pun, zeugma, malapropism, and irony. There are several things I do not really like in your posts: 1) Sometimes you just copy and paste without even mentioning the sites you have taken the information from :( 2) Your task is to read all/several other students' blogs and leave your comments (at least two). But comments like "nice job", "I liked your post", etc. do not add to the understanding of the issue under discussion. I can leave such comments without even reading the blogs. Surely you can do this better than me ... :( :( I would appreciate more the comments that add new information, show some discrepancy or mistake in the blog, contradict, analyze some example from the blog, etc. I am sure you can do this if you just spend m…

Week 3: Metaphor

Hello dear students,

This week we are going to discuss metaphor and its subtypes. You can do whatever you like in your blog - compare and contrast, analyse sentences, download a text and analyse metaphors in it, express your own opinion, etc. Good post will promote further discussion on the topic. You are free to search the Internet for ideas, but be aware of plagiarism!!! Never forget to cite and post links to the useful sites you have used!!! Sometimes my students make pictures of their own to illustrate the SD. That's a good idea to make a video ...

Do not forget about 2 comments to other students' post.

Good luck!!!

Deadline - February, 16
