Graphical EMs (Week 14)

The last we discussed in our lesson - GRAPHICAL EMs: hyphenation, italics, capitalization and multiplication. Hyphenation is the reflection of rhymed or clipped manner in which a word is uttered: (I de-spice you. I really d-o-n-t love you!) Multiplication is the case when one and the same letter written several times: (The la-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-argest tree in the world.) Italics - slopping letters used for the following purposes: 1. To show foreign words that are considered alien for the text 2. To produce the effect of emphasis F.E. I want to tell you something tete-a-tete. Capitalisation - some common nouns written with capital letters. Capitalisation takes place in the following cases: -In adress of personification, which gives some importance and solemnity to the text (Music!Friend o…

Periphrasis, Euphemism, Hyperbole,Understatement (Week 10)

According to I.R Galperin, periphrasis, euphemism, hyperbole, understatement refers to lexical SD and EMs based on the interaction of logical and nominative meanigs. But V.A. Kuharenko refered hyperbole and understatement to lexical SDs and periphrasis to lexico-syntactic SDs. Talking about Skrebnev`s classification, we can see that hyperbole and understatement are in the group of paradigmatic semasiology unit (figures of quantity).Kuharenco and Skrebnev do not belong euphemism and periphrasis anywhere. So, hyperbole came to us from Greek and it means "overshooting"- a deliberate exaggeration of an object feature to such a degree that will show its utter absurdity. "I'd catch a grenade for ya.Throw my hand on the blade for ya.I'd jump in front of a train for ya." (Bruno Mars, song "Grenade"…

comic effect in pun, zeugma, irony and malapropism

This week we discussed the description of 4 SD and EM: pun, zeugma, irony, malapropism. All of them have one common thing- comic effect. And they have a couple of differences. Pun. A play on words. The use of one word in two different applications, the use of two different words, which are pronounced alike. An elephant's opinion carries a lot of weight.(Pun depends on the context.) Zeugma. The use of one word in the same grammatical, but different semantic relations. Formula: Verb+2nouns.One of them is used in indirect meaning, another one is used in direct. He lost his coat and his temper. Irony.A direct contrast of two notions: the notion named and the notion meant. The author says one thing, but really means the opposite to produce a humorous effect. She turned with the sweet smile of an al…

Metonymy,week 5

Good night everybody! Metonymy- the substitution of one object by another on the basis of their common existence in reality. Metonymy is also the rhetorical strategy of describing something indirectly by referring to things around it, as in describing someone's clothing to characterize the individual. For instance, The House was called to order (means that the 'members' of a House< assuming that it's a House of Parliament or House of Representatives, were clled to order. Next example: in Hamlet, one can find many references like the ghost of Hamlet's father refering to his murderer as the serpent that did sting thy father's life. Another mention is where Polonius instucts his son Laertes to give every man thy ear to say tha he must listen to what other people have to say. And the last…

Similie, week 4

Hello everybody! Last week we talked about similies and now I want to share with some information with you. Simile is direct comparison which has 3 objects: the tenor, the vehicle and the link word. The objects seemingly different, different classes, they have something in common. Structurally: A is like B.

1. They (clothes) were in passage like a butterfly in a room (original and ordinary).

2. The pair of them (soldiers) were like two wild birds ( original and ordinary).

3. I like sweet ice-cream (in this case like is the verb in the sentence, so it's not simile).

I understood simile very well and in this blog I analysed some examples of simile.

P.S. Have a good night and enjoy your study!

Metaphor, week 3

This week we were talking about metaphor and subtypes. Metaphor is implide comparison of 2 objects, they are seemingly different, but should be smth in common. The simple formula- A is B. Talking about subtypes of metaphor, we met personification ( inanimate objects and abstract ideas compared to human being) and metagoge ( subtype in which inanimate objects are described as feelings compared to human being). This big and bright family makes our speech vivid. So, lets move to the main task. I have choosen a text full of metaphors and made the analysis of them. This text about my mother and it was the main reason for my choice: My mom is a dozen sweet rose, She is the sun in the rainy dark sky. My mom is a colourfull rainbow, She is a bird tweeting in the trees. She is a book waiting to be…

Good night

Good night everybody!I am very glad to be a participant in this virtual classroom. This way is new for me, but I am sure that blogging will help us during the course.

And talking about stylistics I can say that it`s a big filological ocean. For example, before we knew what the metaphor is, but now we can say about it a lot(subtypes, structure, meaning, etc). I think that in the end of this course we will "sweem deply" in this sphere.

P.S I apologize for being late in blog, but better late, than never =)
