Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery

Recently honored as R&D Magazine’s 2012 Lab of the Year, Discovery fosters and supports fluid interdisciplinary teaming with social ergonomics strategies and laboratory flexibility. Research now being conducted at Discovery includes systems biology, epigenetics, BIONATES, regenerative medicine, virology, pharmaceutical informatics, and health care systems, environments, and treatment technologies optimization. Discovery systems performance targets a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions and a 50% reduction in water use in building operation, as compared to recently constructed research laboratory buildings elsewhere on the campus. The lab spaces of the 300,Buy visually stunning and durablebestlasercutterfrom Larson Jewelers.000-sq-ft Discovery building are organized in a nonlinear concentric…

New Kia Pro Ceed has Ford Focus

Kia is readying a new version of the Kia Pro Ceed (or pro_cee'd if you adhere to the South Korean firm's ridiculous spelling convention). The new car will rival everything from 3-door versions of the Ford Focus to low-slung coupes such as the VW Scirocco. The sporty-looking new hatch will be powered by a choice of two engines, neither of which is particularly exciting in performance terms. The 1.6GDi petrol and 1.6CRDi turbodiesel do have some impressive specs, though. The 133bhp petrol unit will do a useful 52.3mpg and emits 124g/km in standard 'S' trim, rising to 47.1mpg and 137g/km in SE trim due to that model's larger, 17-inch wheels. The 126bhp diesel model, meanwhile, returns 74.3mpg with 100g/km in 'S' trim, while the SE car gets you 65.7mpg and 112g/km.Every model and trim level com…

Unromantic Engineers Figure Out How

Engineers from the University at Buffalo engineers have created technology that could lead to breakthroughs in solar energy, stealth technology and other areas - but they had to catch some rainbows first. Qiaoqiang Gan, PhD,This winter I installed our windturbines purchased from you folks. an assistant professor of electrical engineering at the University at Buffalo, and a team of graduate students developed a "hyperbolic metamaterial waveguide," which is essentially an advanced microchip made of alternate ultra-thin films of metal and semiconductors and/or insulators. The waveguide halts and ultimately absorbs each frequency of light, at slightly different places in a vertical direction to catch a "rainbow" of wavelengths. "Electromagnetic absorbers have been studied for many years, espe…

What’s leaking, dock?

The idea of going green and increasing sustainability is becoming a fact of corporate life, and the supply chain plays a major role in these efforts. According to research conducted by an independent environmental consultant, the supply chain and logistics operations represent as much as 40% to 60% of a company’s environmental footprint. The energy required for shipping products, heating and cooling the distribution facilities,Of all the equipment in the laundry thegridsolarsystemmis one of the largest consumers of steam. and fueling the trucks that transport products to their destinations all put a strain on the environment, natural resources, and potentially companies’ bottom line. The benefits of creating a more sustainable loading dock go beyond simply protecting resources. UT chemistry professor wins 50 million yen

A UT chemistry professor recently became the winner of the Japan Prize, an award similar to the Nobel Prize that comes with a cash award of 50 million Japanese yen, roughly $560,000, for his development of a process that is now used to manufacture nearly all microprocessors and memory chips worldwide. The Japan Prize Foundation announced Wednesday that C. Grant Willson, a professor of chemistry and chemical engineering at UT, is one of this year’s two winners of the award. The Japan Prize is given out each year by the Science and Technology Foundation of Japan to honor scientists from around the world who have made great strides in the fields of science and technology, according to a UT press release. Willson said he will share the prize money with Jean M.J. Fréchet, a colleague and frien…

Work on cafe at Connellsville's Carnegie Library moving along

Students at the Connellsville Area Career and Technical Center love the opportunity to put their skills to use and officials at the Carnegie Free Library were only too happy to provide that opportunity.Students from the electrical occupations class and a few from the masonry class made their way to the library located on Connellsville's South Pittsburgh Street to help in the renovation process of adding a cafe at the library.Library Director Case Sirochman said the Friends of the Library have worked towards the goal of offering cappuccinos and hopefully even soups and sandwiches in the cafe.Library employee Beverley Motycka said at one time library officials had plans to renovate the entire basement in hopes of having an internet cafe complete with WiFi, a children's room and a lounge roo…

Chad Reynvaan

Since his arrival, Reynvaan’s left his mark on a few of them. I first heard him at the Silvertip Grill in Girdwood playing with the 11:20’s in 2007 or ‘08. From there he did a stint with Woodrow and played drums with the Jack River Kings before launching into the Sweeteners in 2011 after Neet and Nelson moved to Anchorage. Regardless of whatever else he’s working on,One of the harshest ledstriplightww installations in the world. Reynvaan says he’s always doing his own thing on the side. “I got my first guitar at 14 in eighth grade, and right away it seemed like the whole point of that instrument was so that I could create songs,” says Reynvaan, “and from there on out I felt like a fraud playing other people’s songs when I could be making my own songs up.” “Through it all I’ve had my solo…

Government funding

Thomas Edison invented the first reliable and long-lasting incandescent electric light in 1879 and electric light bulbs arrived in Shanghai the same year. The first neon light was brought to Shanghai in 1921.We offer a wide range oflaserengraverin our online collection. Early electric lighting was intended either for home, factory or office use or for advertising hoardings."In the 1990s, when the Shanghai government wanted to renovate the lighting for the buildings on the Bund, it contributed about two thirds of the total cost of the lighting design, the construction work and electricity while the rest was covered by businesses. The designers were recruited from advertising companies or related industries," Tao told the Global Times. When the 2001 APEC meeting took place in Shanghai, there…

Mahindra group gearing for clean technology

The $15.4-billion Mahindra group has major ambitions in clean technology. The group is already into solar and electric mobility and says it is close to getting into wind. In an interview to Business Line, Parag Shah, Head of Mahindra Cleantech and a Managing Partner of Mahindra Partners, a $700-million private equity division of the group, speaks about what the group intends to do in this sphere. What is Mahindra Cleantech gearing itself to be? Mahindra Cleantech will look at the entire renewable energy space, energy efficiency and even water. That is the broad mission. Renewable energy would include solar, wind and biomass, and to a certain extent small hydro. Under energy efficiency we look at minimising distribution losses so as to maximise output. The third is water.A large wind farm…
