Inversion

I decided to tell you more about INVERSION. It is an interesting way of playing with order of words in a sentence, to make it more specific, interesting and unusual. "Inversion is so common in English prose that it may be said to be quite as much in accordance with the genius of the language as any other figure; indeed, in many cases it may well be doubted whether there is any real inversion at all. Thus it may be quite as much the natural order to say, 'Blessed are the pure in heart,' as to say, 'The pure in heart are blessed.'"(James De Mille, The Elements of Rhetoric, 1878) "Half an hour later came another inquiry as to tugs. Later came a message from the Irene, telling of the lifting of the fog."(The New York Times, April 7, 1911) "There's a lady wants to see you. Miss Peters her name…

periphrasis

periphrasis

A roundabout way of referring to something by means of several words instead of naming it directly in a single word or phrase. Commonly known as ‘circumlocution’, periphrasis is often used in euphemisms like passed away for ‘died’, but can have a more emphatic effect in poetry, as in the use of kennings. It was especially cultivated by 18th-century poets whose principle of decorum discouraged them from using commonplace words: thus fish were called the finny tribe, and in Robert Blair's poem ‘The Grave’ (1743) a telescope is the sight-invigorating tube. The 17th-century French fashion for préciositécultivated periphrasis to excess.

Pun, zeugma, irony

I liked these themes. And more we learn, more I understand about Stylistics. Now, when I read books, I can say that my way of reading on the path of changes, from "just reading" to "consciously reading". Thank you! pun. It is another stylistic device based on the interaction of two well-known meanings of a word or phrase. It is difficult to draw a vivid distinction between zeugma and the pun. The only reliable distinguishing feature is a structural one: zeugma is the realization of two meanings with the help of a verb which is made to refer to at least two different subjects or objects (direct or indirect). The pun is more independent. There need not necessarily be a word in the sentence to which the pun-word refers ( ‘There comes a period in every man’s life, but she is just a semicolon…

Poetry Analysis. metaphor, simile, metonymy, personification.

There is a simple table, which in short can explain you what is the similie, metaphor and personification means: Also, I found a poetry analysis, where you can clearly see the using of metaphor, similie, metonymy and personification. There is the link where I found this poetry analysis http://www.piclits.com/lessonplans/metaphor_simile_personification.aspx Let's take a look at how metaphor, simile, metonymy, and personification show up in the following poem: The Writer In her room at the prow of the house Where light breaks and the windows are tossed with linden, My daughter is writing a story. I pause in the stairwell, hearing From her shut door a commotion of typewriter-keys Like a chain hauled over a gunwale. Young as she is, the stuffOf her life is a great cargo, and some of it heavy:…

First Task

Hello! My name is Mussina Meruyert. I found this discipline very interesting, because we read literature, different literature and I think that Stylistics will be very useful for us, to deal with genres, expressive means, stylistic devices and with other interesting things.
