Phonetic and graphical stylistic means

Phonetic and graphical stylistic means I'd like to write about phonetic and graphical stylistic means, which I like the most. Capitalization Capitalization - some common nouns written with capital letters. Examples: - "'She said that she would dance with me if I brought her red roses,' cried the young Student." (O. Wilde) - "So the Nightingale flew over to the Rose-tree that was growing beneath the Student's window." (O. Wilde)- "How DISGUSTING!" (J. Galsworthy)- "MISS JEMIMA!" exclaimed Miss Pinkerton. (W. M. Thackeray) Graphon The intentional violation of the graphical shape of word or word combination used to reflect its authentic pronunciation is called a graphon. Examples: - «Vy didn’t you say so before. For all I knowed, he vas one o’ regular threepennies…If he’s anything of a gen’l…

Syntactical SDs and EMs in «The Nightingale and the Rose» by Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wilde The Nightingale and the Rose 'She said that she would dance with me if I brought her red roses,' cried the young Student; 'but in all my garden there is no red rose.' From her nest in the holm-oak tree the Nightingale heard him (inversion), and she looked out through the leaves, and wondered. 'No red rose in all my garden!' he cried, and his beautiful eyes filled with tears. 'Ah, on what little things does happiness depend! (inversion) I have read all that the wise men have written, and all the secrets of philosophy are mine, yet for want of a red rose is my life made wretched.' 'Here at last is a true lover,' said the Nightingale. 'Night after night have I sung of him (inversion), though I knew him not: night after night (ordinary repetition) have I told his story to the star…

Litotes and their examples

Litotes Litotes is a two-component structure in which two negations are joined to give a positive evaluation. Thus "not unkindly" actually means "kindly", though the positive effect is weakened and some lack of the speaker's confidence in his statement is implied. The first component of a litotes is always the negative particle "not", while the second, always negative in semantics, varies in form from a negatively affixed word (as above) to a negative phrase. Litotes is especially expressive when the semantic centre of the whole o structure is stylistically or/and emotionally coloured, as in the case of the following occasional creations: "Her face was not unhand-some" (A.H.) or "Her face was not unpretty". (K.K.)The function of litotes has much in common with that of understatement - bot…

Metaphor, simile, personification, metonymy

Metaphor According to Kukharenko V.A.,a 'metaphor' is a transference of names based on the associated likeness between two objects. (lexical stylistic device) I like his examples of metaphors - “volcano” for the “sun”, “silver dust”, for “stars”. They sounds poetically. They are simple and at the same time very expressive. I think each of us will guess what does it means, if see "silver dust on the sky", but will admire with the beauty of this statement. Not only objects can be compared in a metaphor, but also phenomena, actions or qualities: Some books are to be tasted, others swallowed, and some few to chewed and digested(F. Bacon); pitiless cold; cruel heat; a treacherous calm. (Gurevich) Metaphors may be simple, when expressed by a word or phrase (Man cannot live by bread alone), and…

Introduction

Hello!

My name is Karina Stoyanova! I really like a stylistics. It is a very interesting discipline for me. I think that our speech will be more expressive and figurative due to the studying of stylistics. As shown by the several lessons of stylistics, I knew a small part of stylistic devices and expressive means. To be more precise I've just heard about many of them.

As I know now, stylistics is a branch of general linguistics that studies the various functional styles of speech and the various expressive means and devices of language.

I learn with enthusiasm new and new stylistic devices and expressive means. By trial and error I try to see them in the text. In my opinion, this is very exciting.
