GENERAL NOTES ON FUNCTIONAL SТYLES OF LANGUAGE

The object of lingo-stylistics is the study of the nature, functions and structures of stylistic devices (SD) and expressive means (ЕМ) оn the оnе hand, and the study of the functional styles, оn the other. А functional style of language is а system of interrelated language means which serves а definite aim in communication. А functional style is thus to bе regarded as the product of а certain concrete task set bу the sender of the message. Functional styles арреаг mainly in the literary standard of а language. The literary standard of the English language, like that of аnу other developed language, is not as homogeneous as it mау seem. In fact the Standard English literary language in the course of its development has fallen into several subsystems each of which has acquired its own pecu…

Rhyme

Rhyme has several functions: • it adds a musical quality to the poem; • it makes the poem easier to remember; • it affects the pace and tone of the poem. There are several different types of rhyme: 1. True/perfect/full rhyme -identical sounds correspond exactlyBoat-float; might-right; kite-night; day-say; goes-flows 2. Incomplete/imperfect/half rhyme/slant rhyme:fresh-flesh; road-boat; loads-lads; honour-won her. 3. Eye-rhyme:advice-compromise; have-grave; love-prove; flood-doom 4. End rhymes fall at the end of the lines. They mark the end of the line. 5. Internal rhymes occur within the same line: ‘I bring fresh showers to the thirsting flowers’ The internal rhyme has two functions: dissevering and consolidating, realized simultaneously. According to the way the rhymes are arranged withi…

Rhetorical questiоn

The rhetorical questiоn is a special syntactical stylistic device the essence of which consists in reshaping the grammatical meaning of the interrogative sentence. In other words, the question is no" longer a question but a statement expressed in the form of an interrogative sentence. Thus there is an interplay of two structural meanings: 1) that of the question and 2) that of the statement (either affirmative or negative). Both are materialized simultaneously. For example: "Are these the remedies for a starving and desperate populace?" "Is there not blood enough upon your penal code, that more must be poured forth to ascend to heaven and testify against you? (Byron) One can agree with Prof. Popov who states: "...the rhetorical question is equal to a categorical pronouncement plus an exc…

Oxymoron

According to Galperin Oxymoron is a combination of two words (mostly an adjective and a noun or an adverb with an adjective) in which the meanings of the two clash, being opposite in sense, for example: 'low skyscraper', 'sweet sorrow', 'nice rascal', 'pleasantly ugly face' Here are some quotations of famous people, containing oxymoron. "Hegel was right when he said that we learn from history that man can never learn anything from history." - George Bernard Shaw. "I can resist anything, except temptation." - Oscar Wilde. "Simplicity is not a simple thing." - Charles Chaplin. "Always and never are two words you should always remember never to use." - Wendell Johnson. "The best cure for insomnia is to get a lot of sleep." - W.C. Fields. "Always be sincere, even when you don't mean it." - Ir…

the funeral of hearts

I remember when I was a teenager, I liked the finnish rock band H.I.M. very much. The following song was my favorite one. Here are some nice metaphors for Love.

Love's the funeral of hearts

And an ode for cruelty

When angels cry blood

On flowers of evil in bloom

The funeral of hearts

And a plea for mercy

When love is a gun

Separating me from you

When people are unhappy in their love, they feel like their hearts die. And sometimes love can be truly cruel. Although there are so many devices, I think they fully describe the pain of love. There is no excess of vividness.
