Direct and Indirect onomatopeia

Direct onomatopoeia is contained in words that imitate natural sounds, as ding-dong, burr, bang, cuckoo. These words have different degrees of imitative quality. Some of them immediately bring to mind whatever it is that produces the sound. Others require the exercise of a certain amount of imagination to decipher it. Onomatopoetic words can be used in a transferred meaning, as for instance, ding - dong, which represents the sound of bells rung continuously, may mean 1) noisy, 2) strenuously contested. (Direct) onomatopoeia (звукоподражание) - the use of words whose sounds imitate those of the signified object of action (V.A.K.) (Direct) onomatopoeia is a combination of speech-sounds which aims at imitating sounds produced in nature (wind, sea, thunder, etc.), by things (machines or tools…

Litotes in the songs. They aren't bad )))

Litotes It’s quite simple. Litotes is a figure of speech in which a person uses a negative statement to enforce the positive. For example, saying not bad instead of good. It’s really an understatement. The word litotes comes from Greek litos meaning simple, plain. Snow Patrol - You Could Be Happy You could be happy and I won't knowBut you weren't happy the day I watched you goAnd all the things that I wish I had not saidAre played on lips 'til it's madness in my headSomehow everything I own smells of youAnd for the tiniest moment it's all not trueDo the things that you always wanted toWithout me there to hold you back, don't think, just do Bob Dylan Tomorrow Is A Long Time If today was not an endless highway, If tonight was not a crooked trail, If tomorrow wasn't such a long time, Then lo…

Differences between Asyndeton & Polysyndeton

Asyndeton When conjunctions (but, for, so, or, and) are done away with after every successive clause or phrase for effect, then it’s called asyndeton. For example: I came; I saw; I conquered. It is the opposite of polysyndeton. The word asyndeton comes from Greek asyndetos meaning “not bound together”. Examples of asyndeton We met, we got engaged, we married. She is addicted to chocolates, cakes, cookies. I could have gone to war, I didn’t. He tried to betray you, to cheat you, to deceive you. Smile, talk, bye-bye. He received applause, prizes, money, fame. He provided her education, allowance, dignity. Example of asyndeton in Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf “Listlessly, yet confidently, poor people all of them, they waited; looked at the Palace itself with the flag flying; at Victoria, b…

Your Love is (Love song with metaphors)

My love is a butterflyFloating sweetly through a summer fieldSpreading beauty and love under the midday sunAnd your love is an entomologistChasing me down, ensnaring me in your netAnd taking me home, jabbing a pin through my gutsAnd mounting me on your wallA pinYour love is a pin through my guts My love is a sailing shipSeeking out a friendly shoreTo cast out my anchor, happily never sail no moreAnd your love is the ocean that drowns meLeaving my bones to be picked at by crabsAnd bringing settlers to the New World with smallpox and influenzaAnd wiping out the indigenous populationSmallpoxYour love is smallpox You are a giant redwood falling on a family of deerYou are a soaring eagle landing in a minefieldYou are river rising over the downtown leveesYou are Christmas in Iran My love is a t…
