SDs and EMs

All stylistic means of a language can be divided into expressive means, which are used in some specific way, and special devices called stylistic devices. The expressive means of a language are those phonetic means, morphological forms, means of word-building, and lexical, phraseological and syntactical forms, all of which function in the language for emotional or logical intensification of the utterance. These intensifying forms of the language have been fixed in grammars and dictionaries. Some of them are normalized, and good dictionaries label them as intensifiers. periphrasis (and its types), hyperbole, understatement, irony, zeugma, and pun

Metaphor

Metaphor are comparisons that show how two things that are not alike in most ways are similar in one important way. Authors use them to make their writing more interesting or entertaining. For instance:

  1. Cindy was such a male. We couldn't get her to change her mind. (The metaphor compares Cindy to a male because she was very stubborn)
  2. The poor rat didn't have a chance. Our old cat, a bolt of fighting, caught his prey. (The cat was compared to a bolt of lighting because he was very fast)
  3. Even a child could carry my dog, Dogface, around for hours. He's such a feather. (This metaphor implies that Dogface is not heavy)
