Many thanks!

I would like to thank you for your lessons. This course was very useful and interesting for me. It made me muse upon many things because usually when we use our language we don't think too much which stylistics means do we use. I found many new devices that I didn't know before. Now I can simply distinguish them in our every day language and literature. What did I like the most during the classes? EXAMPLES!I think that examples are the easiest way to understand everything.I liked playing with the pieces of paper where we needed to guess which stylistic devices were used in the sentences or word combinations. That was very productive work. One more thing that I liked is our blog working. To my mind it's a good way to share our ideas and find out something new every time. It's also a good wa…

Epithet, euphemism, hyperbole and understatement.

What is an epithet? epithet is a word or phrase which is used to characterize a person or thing. Shakespearean EpithetsThou mad mustachio purple-hued maltworms!Thou puking knotty-pated lout!Thou beslubbering swag-bellied ratsbane!Thou roguish tickle-brained fustilarian! What is EUPHEMISM? To make an unpleasant word or expression sound politically and morally right and look less offensive, euphemism was invented. This figure of speech can be best defined as coded words or phrases, which we use to express ourselves when caught in an awkward situation, without sounding uncivil or being downright vague. Euphemism is one figure of speech that camouflages direct, unfriendly or disagreeable expressions with more pleasant and ethically correct words or phrases. The word euphemism originated from…

Pun — Zeugma — Irony — Malapropism

Pun is the usually humorous use of a word in such a way as to suggest two or more of its meanings or the meaning of another word similar in sound. A pun is a figure of speech which consists of a deliberate confusion of similar words or phrases for rhetorical effect, whether humorous or serious. A pun can rely on the assumed equivalency of multiple similar words (homonymy), of different shades of meaning of one word (polysemy), or of a literal meaning with a metaphor. Bad puns are often considered to be cheesy. Examples Sea captains don't like crew cuts. Does the name Pavlov ring a bell? Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana. A gossip is someone with a sense of rumor. Without geometry, life is pointless. When you dream in color, it's a pigment of your imagination. Condoms sho…

Metaphor, simile, personification, metonymy

A metaphor is a figure of speech that describes a subject by asserting that it is, on some point of comparison, the same as another otherwise unrelated object. Purpose of Metaphors Expressions are used to give effect to a statement. Imagine how bland a statement such as “he was sad” is, compared to a statement describing a “sea of grief.” The metaphor is sure to give the reader a better idea of the depths of grief in this situation. Similarly, who would really spend time thinking of the vast differences between success and failure if the metaphor was missing, and the statement was just “Everyone wants to be successful, no one wants to be a failure?” That statement would be a failure itself, in inspiring interest in the conversation! Metaphors are meant to create an impact in the minds of…
