Stylistics course

It is our last week of Stylistics course. To be honest at the beginning of the course I can't even imagine how to distinguish SDs and EMs, because I haven't any base. In practice it was much easier than I thought. At first I expected that I can distinguish all SDs easily. Thanks to constant practice, now I can differ some SDs at once, some require more time. Anyway, I'm glad that this course helps me absolutely. All my expectations came true. Also I liked a work with the text when I found SDs by myself. Such kind of work helps me in other subjest as an interpretation of a literary text. This course was useful for me in making my speech more richer and vivid. Step by step I began to use SDs and EMs in my ordinary speech that allows me to express my thoughts and ideas more accessible and cle…

Becky’s beagle barked and bayed, becoming bothersome for Billy. Carries cat clawed her couch, creating chaos. Alice’s aunt ate apples and acorns around August. Rhyme is a repetition of similar sounds in two or more words, most often at the end of lines in poems and songs. Rhyme partly seems to be enjoyed simply as a repeating pattern that is pleasant to hear. It also serves as a powerful mnemonic device, facilitating memorization. The regular use of tail rhyme helps to mark off the ends of l…

Litotes, polysyndeton, asyndeton

I want to discuss syntactical SDs as litotes, polysyndeton and asyndeton because I often use them in my speech. Litotes is a kind of understatement, where the speaker or writer uses a negative of a word ironically, to mean the opposite. Litotes is to be found in English literature right back to Anglo-Saxon times. is a kind of understatement, where the speaker or writer uses a negative of a word ironically, to mean the opposite. Oxymoron, Hyperbole, Understatement

Oxymoron Oxymoron is a figure of speech by which a locution produces an incongruous, seemingly self-contradictory effect, as in “cruel kindness” or “to make haste slowly.” Examples: "The best cure for insomnia is to get a lot of sleep." (attributed to W.C. Fields) "The best cure for insomnia is to get a lot of sleep."(attributed to W.C. Fields) "That building is a little bit big and pretty ugly." (attributed to James Thurber) "I want to die young at a ripe old age." (Ashley Montagu, quoted by Mardy Grothe in Oxymoronica, HarperCollins, 2004) "I want to die young at a ripe old age." (Ashley Montagu, quoted by Mardy Grothe in Oxymoronica, HarperCollins, 2004) Hyperbole Hyperbole is a figure of speech in which exaggeration is used for emphasis or effect; an extravagant statement. Metaphor,Simile,Pesonifcation and Metonymy

Metaphor,Simile,Pesonifcation and Metonymy Metaphor According to I.R.Galperin,the term 'metaphor', as the etymology of the word reveals, means transference of some quality from one object to another. Also the term has been known to denote the transference of meaning from one word to another.
