Weeeeeeeeeeelllll!!! That’s it! The end of our session))) It is cool, but I will miss our “Stylistics”! I want to express my gratitude to our dear teacher – Miss Gafiatulina! Thank you a lot!!! I'm obliged to you very much. Your lessons were interesting, and it was a very good idea with blogs.  I liked it. I am grateful to you for all knowledge, which you put into my head) I’ve understood the stylistics after all! Now it is not a problem for me to find any SDs and EMs in the text and to do stylistics analysis for example. I’m proud of it)

I wish you every success!

P.S. I hope that you will have the same good students next year like we are.

Lexical SDs and EMs

To summarize all our knowledge concerning the big block named "Lexical stylistic devices and expressive means", I want to make something of conclusion. Stylistic means (the term used by I. R. Galperin, V. A. Kukharenko, and other Soviet linguists dealing with stylistics) are means at the disposal of the author that help him to achieve the utmost expressiveness of his language and lend the desired emotional colouring to the description. Stylistic means help the reader to disclose the author’s attitude to the events described and to see a lot between the lines of the literary work. According to Yu. M. Skrebnev they are also named figures of speech, or tropes; according to Edgar V. Roberts - rhetorical figures. I. R. Galperin, V. A. Kukharenko, and other Soviet scholars classified all stylis…

HYPERBOLE and UNDERSTATEMENT

Hyperbole is a lexical stylistic device in which emphasis is achieved through deliberate exaggeration, or an overstatement. Hyperbole is usually not intended to be taken literally. Hyperbole is one of the common expressive means of our everyday speech (e.g. “I have told it to you a thousand times” or “I could sleep for a year”). Due to long and repeated use hyperboles have lost their originality. Hyperbole can be expressed by all notional parts of speech. It is important that both communicants should clearly perceive that the exaggeration serves not to denote actual quality or quantity but signals the emotional background of the utterance. If this reciprocal understanding is absent, hyperbole turns into a mere lie. Hyperbole is aimed at exaggerating quantity or quality. When it is directe…

Role of metaphor in our speech

Metaphor is a locution consisting in using of words and expressions in figurative sense on the basis of any analogy, similarity and comparison. As a rule, metaphor is called as an interesting comparison of some expression. Let's try to understand together what’s role of metaphor in our speech. Very well known sayings and proverbs are very good example of metaphors. It is figuratively corrupt image of anything. Metaphors serve to facilitate our understanding of what other people inform us about in the hope that we will comprehend them how they wish it. For example: “The sunset resembles a fire”. An unusual and a sonorous word is a metaphor. It is true that in the evening a sunset is colourful-bright and has a resemblance to a fire. Even it is possible to imagine the whole horizon in an eno…

About Stylistics as a science

Hello everybody! I’m very glad to be here =) It is a very nice idea to create such an on-line stylistics class. Thanks our teacher Miss Gafiatulina for that! =) Hope it will be interesting to have our own blogs. “Stylistics” is not a new discipline for our group – FL -302(sh.), but I think we will get a lot of extra knowledge and practice. Hope we will get only excellent marks and will be on good terms with our new teacher =) For those who forgot or don’t know I made a note about “stylistics” as a science. Stylistics is one of the most interesting and ancient sciences. The concept about styles has arisen since a person understood that the identical set of linguistic means wasn't always pertinent in this or that situation. Since this period it has became necessary for a person to know in w…
