The Swedish government will invest 4.4 billion krone (£354 million) of its 2016 budget in a bid to become the world’s first fossil-fuel free nation by 2050. The biggest solar photovoltaic power plant in Europe is now fully online, according to reports in France. The 300-megawatt Cestas solar project near Bordeaux, southwestern France, has connected to the grid after the last 12 megawatt portion of the power plant was added. The plant, made up of 25 different 12 MW project portions, is the largest in the whole of Europe and will be officially inaugurated on 1 December. The project was built by a consortium including Eiffage, Krinner, and Schneider Electric. Pakistan has launched a new roadmap to add 3.5 gigawatts of wind energy capacity by 2018 and the government is aiming to boost the share of renewables in its overall energy mix. The Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB), which is part of the Ministry of water & Power, announced that over 40 wind energy projects are being developed and will contribute around 2,050 megawatts of capacity to the national grid by 2018. Business leaders including Bill Gates, Sir Richard Branson and Mark Zuckerberg launched a new global clean energy research project on Monday at the UN climate summit in Paris. The founders of Microsoft, The Virgin Group and Facebook announced the Breakthrough Energy Coalition at COP21 in the French capital and the initiative includes 28 investors from more than 10 countries.
