I just work over some idioms from movies, cartoons and books. Some of them are  not understandable from the meanings of the individual words.  E.x. "kick the bucket" means "to die".

Here are some others:

par for the course

live high on the hog

with the naked eye

fresh as a daisy

put someone in the driver's seat

I finally understood the difference between summary, essay and paraphrase.

A summary is a brief statement of a writer's ideas.

So you don't need to:

  • use quotations
  • paraphrase
  • include your own interpretations
  • slant on the material
  • give details, facts, examples and illustrations.

Give the main points only. Write in your own words.

I am working over writing styles. I found some useful advices:

First, your whole paper must be concise, so eliminate what your readers do not need to know.

Second, avoid repetitions, fillers, combine sentences, when the same nouns and pronouns appear in two sentences.

Third, eliminate who, what, that without affecting the clarity of your sentence.

I am working over my grammatical problems according to the "Practical Grammar". It's an American book and very wonderful. Explanations are clear and there are many exercises.

I write the new words on the stickers and glue them everywhere - in the bath, in my room, in the hall. It helps me to memorize them quicker.

I recommend one free on-line learning programme. Not bad.

Marathon isn't an easy work. Sometimes you fall down and feel defeated, and so hard to get up and believe in yourself. A scene from Rocky II came to my mind. As you remember Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed have totally been exhausted. Both of them were down, lying on the canvas. Rocky's manager shouted in Rocky's ears: "Get up, you bum. Get uuuup!" He kept screaming and Rocky found the last strength and stood up. He stood for only a few moments, but he is on his feet long enough to be declared the winner and new champion. This is my lovely and encouraging scene.

This week I watched some on-line English learning programmes. I didn't like them. Most of them are too easy even for the advanced students. I started to watch historical movies in English, through them it's possible to learn to speak English, even their speech is so fast.

This week I read the book about one woman, who lost two sons and the third son  became a gay. It was a tragedy for her as a mother. But she found a courage and didn't give up. She "put her gloomies in the box and laugh". I found that the new words, which are not used in the English language, are often met in the American English like "unbreake my heart, uncry my tears". Or "gloomies" - the neologism (if we could say that)  from the adjective  "gloomy" never used as the noun in plural. There is another noun "gloom". But in the word "gloomies" there is a sarcasm of the author. What is your opinons, friends? I want to know.

IELTS Marathon

Hi, everybody!

Today is the fisrt day of IELTS Marathon. I started my first round with the translation of the business articles. I translated one article from English into Russian. And then decided to translate the same article into English without looking at the original text. It's interesting that the translation was different from the original article. I mean the sentence order and lexicon were changed.
