Phonetic SDs and phono-graphical EMs

At the last lecture we discussed about Phonetic SDs and graphical EMs. Also, we studied how distinguish them in the sentences. They are: Rhyme is the repetition of identical ending sound combination. F.e: might-right. Rhythm is the repetition of similar sound stressed and unstressed syllables in poetry. F.e:The curfew tolls the knell of parting day. Alliteretion is repetittion of similar consonant sounds to impart a melodic effect to an utterance. F,e: spring, sudden and sentence. Assonance is repetition of similar vowel sounds to impart a melodic effect to an utterance. F.e: appear and mean, gain and brain. Syntactic SDs

At the last lecture, we discussed about syntactic SDs. We studied distinguish them in the sentences. They are : Inversion, Litotes, Antithesis , Climax ,Anticlimax, Break-in-the-Narrative , Question -in-the-Narrative , Asyndeton, Polysyndeton and Repetition. Inversion is a direct order of words in a sentence, it makes one of them more important. F. e: Scarcely had I arrived home when there was a knock on the door. Litotes is when two negations are joined to give a positive evaluation. F. e: It was a strange clicking noise in the distance, not unlike castanets. Understatement,Oxymoron,Periphrasis and Hyperbole.

Understatement is a figure of speech in which a writer or speaker deliberately makes a situation seem less important or serious than it is. F.e:It's just a scratch. Hyperbole is  an extreme exaggeration used to make a point. It is like the opposite of “understatement. F.e: I’ve told you a million times. Oxymoron is a figure of speech in which incongruous or seemingly contradictory terms appear side by side. F.e:This was a minor crisis and the only choice was to drop the product line. Periphrasis is a device by which grammatical meaning is expressed by one or more free morphemes instead of by inflectional affixes or derivation. F.e:The king of the football team hiked the ball.

Irony, pun, zeugma, malapropism and anti-proverb

At the lecture, we discussed what an irony, pun, zeugma, malapropism and anti-proverb. What means they give. We practiced to distinguish them in the sentences. The irony is when the writer says one thing but actually means the opposite regret. F, e: It is a good idea that I've never heard in my life. Pun is the when use of two different words, which are pronounced alike. F, e: When an actress saw her first strands of grey hair, she thought she’d dye. Zeugma is when use of one word in the same grammatical but different relations. F, e: On his fishing trip, he caught eight trout and a cold. Malapropism is when a substitution of one word for another based on a blunder. F, e:She is as headstrong as an allegory. We know that what is an anti-proverb. F,e: Where there's a will, there's a lawsuit.

Metaphor,metonymy,simile and personification

We discussed about metaphor, metonymy, simile and personification. Also we learned how to distinguish them in the text. And all of them we meet in the literature texts.Then we can find them through a certain sign. Metaphor is one phenomenon change to another. F. e: Life is book. Metonymy is one object by another they should be common existence in reality. F. e: “That was old fish-face’s room.” Alfred said. Simile is the comparison of two unlike objects. F. e: Innocence is like a dumb leper, who has lost its bell. In there we distinguished it look at link-words: “like”. Personification is the qualities of a living things. For example: “He stood for an instant on the threshold and their eyes met”.

My first post

Hello!I don't know any information about English Stylistics. I want to study how we use Stylistics in our speech. We will be use it in writing. I think we will study many devices how to learn Stylistics and peculiarities of Stylistics. By the end of the course we will use all these rules in our speech. I sure that Stylistics help us to improve our  speech. I consider it is necessary to study it. Because if you know how properly to use Stylistics you can easy communicate with somebody.
