Thank you=)

Julia Olegovna!

Stylistics is one of the useful and interesting subjects. In the first lecture you asked us what is : “She is a rose”, and now I know the answer. Before I didn’t know about SDs and EDs. To be honest, sometimes at the lecture I didn’t understand some devices. But in the blog I read presentations of other students and understand them. This blog is very useful, because some examples from presentations, we can often meet in different stories.

Stylistics helps in other subjects, such as interpretation. In the interpretation we look for SDs and EDs.

Your lesson helped me to improve my knowledge. Also I like that in your lessons you used video and presentations with different examples. Thanks for this course of stylistics.

A Child's Dream of a Star by Charles Dickens

THERE was once a child, and he strolled about a good deal, and thought of a number of things. He had a sister, who was a child too, and his constant companion. These two used to wonder all day long. They wondered at the beauty of the flowers; they wondered at the height and blueness of the sky; they wondered at the depth of the bright water; they wondered (repetition-anaphora)at the goodness and the power of GOD(capitalization) who made the lovely world. They used to say to one another, sometimes, Supposing all the children upon earth were to die, would the flowers, and the water, and the sky be sorry? They believed they(repetition) would be sorry. For, said they, the buds are the children of the flowers, and the little playful streams that gambol down the hill-sides are the children of t…

Alliteration, onomatopoeia, assonance

Alliteration is a literary device that emphasizes on repetition of a particular consonant in the first syllables in a series of words. It is important to know that in alliteration, the sound of the words matter the most. It is extensively used in literature, particularly in poetry. Alliteration is like rhyming words. Examples Of Alliteration Alice's aunt ate apples and acorns around august. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. Becky's beagle barked and bayed, becoming bothersome for Billy. We felt dreary and dismal in the darkness of the night. Carries cat clawed her couch, creating chaos. She shouted and shooed the sheep to the shelter. Dan's dog dove deep in the dam, drinking dirty water as he dove. She sees sheep sleeping. Show Shawn Sharon's shabby shoes. Fred's friends fried…

Polysyndeton, Asyndeton, Climax, Anticlimax, Litotes, Antithesis

Polysyndeton is used to achieve a variety of effects in poetry and literature. The overuse of conjunctions in close succession helps achieve rhythm, mainly by introducing continuation and slowing it. This rhetoric figure of speech can convey solemnity or even exhibit a childlike spirit. Having a Greek etymology, which means 'bound together', a sentence employing a 'polysyndetic device' uses coordinating conjunctions like 'and', 'or', 'but', or 'nor' to link the words, phrases or clauses. It adds cadence to the sentence or a series of sentences. Usually, in a grammatically correct sentence, the word or phrase after the 'and' is given most importance. However, polysyndeton gives equal importance to every element in the list. Usually used in short stories, novels and speeches, the tempo and…

Metaphor, simile, metonymy and personification

A simile is a comparison between two unlike things, usually using the words "like" or "as."The presence of these two words tends to make similes easy to identify on a test. "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get." - Forrest Gump. Metaphor is a figure of speech frequently taught alongside simile to help illustrate the differences between the two words. Personification is the attribution of human qualities to non-human things. These can be objects, events, ideas, or even living, non-human things. Metonymy is a slightly more difficult term to explain. It is a figure of speech in which a thing is referred to not by its own name, but by the name of something closely related to it. This idea can best be clarified through a couple of examples.F.e:The "pen" stands…
