Reflection

Stylistics is very interesting class for me. It helps to analyze and understand literary works deeper. It is funny when you notice that you use zeugma, oxymoron or antonomasia in everyday speech. It was interesting for me to see, how different authors with using stylistics devices tryed to convey their ideas, attitude to smth, emotions and etc. Stylistics is made us more broad-minded! Thank you Yuliya Olegovna for these classes! I believe, we will never forget it.

O Henry, A Service of Love

When one loves one's Art (capitalization) no service seems (allitiration) too hard. That is our premise. This story shall draw a conclusion from it, and show at the same time that the (alliteration) premise is incorrect(alliteration). That will be a new thing in logic, and a (alliteration) feat in story-telling somewhat older than the great wall of China(allusion). Joe Larrabee came out of the post-oak flats of the Middle West pulsing with a genius for pictorial art(metaphor). At six (inversion) he drew a picture of the town pump with a prominent citizen passing it hastily. This effort was framed and hung in the drug store window by the side of the ear of corn with an uneven number of rows. At twenty (inversion) he left for New York with a flowing necktie and a capital tied up somewhat cl…

Repetition, Anaphora, Polysyndeton, Anticlimax, Inversion

Hello my friends! I like Charles Dickens's stories and I want to write about stylistic devices which were used by the writer in the "A Christmas Carol". 1. Repetition - the reoccurrence of sentence units. Words or phrases are repeated throughout the text to emphasize certain facts or ideas. Example: The cold within him froze his old features, nipped his pointed nose, shriveled his cheek, stiffened his gait; made his eyes red, his thin lips blue and spoke out shrewdly in his grating voice. 2. Anaphora. The same word or phrase is used to begin successive clauses or sentences. Thus, the reader's / listener's attention is drawn directly to the message of the sentence. Example: No wind that blew was bitterer than he, no falling snow was more intent upon its purpose, no pelting rain less open t…

Metaphor, Metonymy, Similie, Personification

Examples: - On Poirot’s side was a cup of thick, rich chocolate. (Agatha Christie, The chocolate box) - «You are Monseier Hercule Poirot?» she asked in a low sweet voice. (Agatha Christie, The chocolate box) - It was my duty, but my flesh was weak. (Agatha Christie, The chocolate box) - The fog came pouring in at every chink and keyhole, and wasso danse without, that although the court was of the narrowest, the houses opposite were mere phantoms. (Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol) Examples: - It was at the time of the terrible struggle in France between church and state.(Agatha Christie, The chocolate box) - «The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?» said Scrooge. (Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol) Examples: - The sound resounded through the house like thunder. (Charle…
