«The Power of words» Open seminar

Al-Farabi Kazakh National University

Department of General Linguistics and European Languages

Foreign language study is all about learning how to truly communicate and connect with others—an incredibly important life skill that can only be cultivated by interacting with people. When you master a foreign language, you can exercise your new superhuman power of being able to understand what someone is saying, recall the proper vocabulary and grammar, put that vocabulary and grammar into the proper context, and reply back—all on the spot and in a timely manner. You’ve connected. And that is what it’s all about.

As a language teacher, one of our main purpose is to help students develop a rich and useful vocabulary inventory. On December 20, 2019 by the supervision of Marina Zhambylkyzy, a teacher in the discipline of the Methodology of Foreign Language Education, 1st year master students of specialty 7M01704-two foreign languages held a training seminar.

During the training seminar presented fabulous ways of teaching vocabulary by using different types of modern methods for all the levels of foreign language learners, such as, using demonstrations and showing pictures, teaching words in the context, reading the word and etc. It discusses that vocabulary is needed for expressing meaning and in using the receptive (listening and reading) and the productive (speaking and writing) skills. Also studies that setting a good context is an essential prerequisite for vocabulary teaching as it helps in both engaging the attention of the learners and naturally generating the target vocabulary.

At the end of the seminar all participants shared with their thoughts and methods. For participation all participants were awarded with certificates. To sum it all up, according to Rudolf Flesch «You can't build up a vocabulary if you never meet any new words. And to meet them you must read. The more you read the better»
