The traditional pressure cooker is also an energy efficient device for cooking purpose. They are also fast, fuel saving and once the pressure cooker gets its pressure we have not to heat on full. Pressure cookers preserve the nutritional elements of the food. People living at high altitudes where the pressure is low can use it more. On an average pressure cooker cook food about 70% faster than conventional cooking. For example CFL bulbs use 75% less energy and live 10 times longer than traditional incandescent lights which have approximately 1200 hours life. Once we purchase them we have to operate them at proper voltages otherwise they get damaged soon and we have to properly dispose them as they contain mercury. LEDs relatively modern device uses 85% less energy and lives 50 times longer than incandescent lights and their light tends to be more directional, whereas other bulbs project their lights in 360 degrees. The torches and other lighting systems based on LEDs with rechargeable battery are available in our markets, are extremely useful.

Computer monitors and TV's are becoming more energy efficient with new technologies like Thin Film Transistor (TFT), Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), Light Emitting Diode (LED) etc which are fast replacing our traditional Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) based monitors. In comparison these modern monitors are slim and bring along a host of advantages, such as space saving, portability, less radiation emission and off course using less power. A typical 17" LCD will consume about 80-100W power, the same size CRT will take 150-250W power.

Though solar electricity is very expensive and it is debated that it becomes generally cheaper to reduce usage of normal electric power than to build a larger solar electric system. But still than solar energy can meet some of our electricity requirements at our home and put less demand on LPG gas and electricity. With solar photovoltaic home lighting modules or panels we can have solar home lighting and solar inverters.

It is a fact that we cannot go back to traditional Chullah system to burn firewood and dung. The firewood too is very costly and we cannot effort it. We have to further search out the possibility of new efficient ways of saving energy and this can be done by undertaking research projects and assignments by our university and college students so that our poor are also benefited.
