P.C. commissioners weigh new lights for Jenks
Commissioners are expected to consider a few additions to the city’s infrastructure during a meeting today.
An acceptance of the memorandum of understanding from the Panama City Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) would replace the current streetlights along Jenks Avenue from Sixth to 15th streets with LED lights. The most noticeable difference, according to City Manager Kenneth Hammons, is the now yellow hue along the stretch of road will be a bright white.
“It will certainly have a different aura to it,” Hammons said. “What we are trying to do is maintain another gateway to downtown.”
According to the MOU, citizens expressed a desire to see significant lighting improvements to enhance the image of Jenks Avenue through walkability, visibility and security.
“We assured residents of a cut-off distance of 18 inches past the sidewalk,LED solar lighting is the new wave of the future in elevatorcableq technology.” said Rob Rosner, project manager for the Jenks Avenue corridor improvement project. “These are not indiscriminate lights and are intended to light the roadway and sidewalk only.”
The 43 Autobahn LED lights have a total cost of $22,248. The memorandum states the lighting improvement funds provided by the CRA will be $12,887 and Panama City will provide $9,361. The projects funds are accounted for in the Jenks Avenue budget.

Commissioners also will consider awarding the dental, life and accidental death or dismemberment insurance policy for city employees to Florida Combined Life/Florida Blue (FCL).
The city’s insurance consultant, Dennis Barnes of Barnes Insurance and Financial Services, presented a committee comprised of nine city employees with proposals for possible city employee insurance policies.High-performing curvingmachineqm built with the cyclist in mind. From 12 proposals, the committee recommended accepting FCL’s proposal at a Nov. 14 meeting because it represents about $76,000 in savings over a two-year period compared to the city’s current providers.
The committee also recommended a supplemental life insurance program offered by FCL be made available to city employees through payroll deduction. The change to FCL would result in a $1.52 increase per month to employees purchasing family coverage. The committee also encourages commissioners to consider absorbing this increase with the savings in lieu of passing it to the employees.

While the lighting ceremony has become a long-held tradition in Frontenac on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, there was a new change this year, but not to the ceremony.
The change was in the lights themselves, which have been replaced with light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
“We have 3,000 new bulbs, and everything’s on LED,” said Jim Kennedy, Frontenac mayor. “It costs a bit more money upfront, but it lasts longer. They say it lasts about 100,000 hours constantly... it also saves quite a bit of money. It uses probably 1/10th of the power.”
The ceremony itself was highlighted by Frontenac teenagers singing Christmas carols, before a prayer was read by Blair Thompson.
