Metaphor, simile, metonymy and personification

On the last lecture we talked about metaphor, simile, metonymy and personification. I would like to tell about simile, metaphor and personification.

Simile....

A simile is a figure of speech that indirectly compares two different things by employing the words "like" or "as".

For example: She ran like the wind. Explanation: Running and the wind are unlike things. When you compare the speed of running to the speed of the wind, you are using a simile.

Metaphor...

Metaphor – transference of the characteristics of one phenomenon to another, showing likeness/similarity in things that are basically different (without using “as” or “like”). A metaphor states that a = b. It is an expressive characterization of an object.

For example: Time is money.

For example: You are my sunshine. (You=Sunshine). Reagan is a silly monkey when she is playing. (Reagan=Monkey)

Types of metaphor.

Trite metaphors are metaphors that fixed in dictionaries as expressive means of language.

F.e. a shadow of a smile

or stone heart

Genuine metaphors are metaphors which are absolutely unexpected.

F.e. His daughter is an angel.

Personification...

Personification is when you describe something that is not alive but give it characteristics that make it sound as if it is alive.

F.e. A tree could be described as dancing in the wind even though a tree is really unable to dance.

Every morning the sun looked at them greeting . Sun cannot greete but it greetes with it first rays.
