Education is key to reaching goals

This Christmas, program employee Mary Guerrero said she has a lot to celebrate. At age 16,A strong wind gust and attractive rebates may not add up to a good deal on laserengraverkk. she became a farmworker and worked about 23 years in the fields, traveling around the country to follow the tomato seasons. Now, she is continuing her education.
"My parents were farmworkers," Guerrero said. "My father did not want this life for me. Unfortunately, I could not continue my education until a few years ago. Now, I am 46 years old, and I am in my second semester at University of South Florida. I want to be a social worker."
Guerrero said her father had to drop out of school in the third grade, becoming the man of the house after his father abandoned him and his mother. Her father died seven years ago.
"He could not have the education that he wanted to," she said. "So, that was his wish for his kid. I am glad to have the opportunity to make his wish come true."
The MTI farmworker program was an essential service to help Guerrero in her quest. She now helps others in similar situations change their lives. She described her job as inspirational, a way to show others how to realize opportunities and achieve goals.
"Everybody has a dream when they are a child, but sometimes these dreams are broken due to the difficulties that life presents," she said. "We help these children and adults make the dreams that they had once ago, be real."
The farmworker program recently earned a certificate of excellence from the Florida Department of Education for exceeding goals for 2011 and 2012. There were 142 new participants, 170 obtained employment and 333 completed training. "Our goal for next year is do more than in the year before," Guerrero said. "We always want to do our best and find new ways to better serve the farmworker communities."
Upon returning home for the holidays, Army Spc. Taylor Livingston received a surprise Friday.
