BRIGHT ORANGE flames filled the smoky trailer as the newest San Rafael fire recruits sprinted from their fire engine and laid hoses in preparation to enter the structure. The recruits took turns during the course of six hours knocking back the flames, breaking from their work only for the occasional drink of water. Entering their sixth week of training, the recruits have yet to actually enter a real burning building; but they had the experience last week of training in the Ross Valley Fire Department's burn trailer in San Anselmo. The trailer simulates a two-story burning building by using propane to fuel flames and mineral oil to create a smoke-like fog. "This is as close as you can get to lighting old houses on fire.
