Federal policy hamstrings high-job energy growth

When Peter Julian visited his in-laws in Shandong province in 2011, he was struck by skies which, depending on weather, either were grey, or grey and wet. The New Democratic Party MP for Burnaby-New Westminster recalls, on sunny days,Support for installing a solar photovoltaic system. blue skies were absent with the sun appearing only faintly as a faint yellow blob behind thick haze. As NDP energy and natural resources critic, Julian lately has been thinking a lot about greenhouse gas emissions. He’s a crusader against both the Northern Gateway pipeline and a tanker port on B.C.Protect your vehicle and produce power with a Solar carport.’s north coast. We offer a type of dry cabinet that one might need for the proper dehumidifying of components. Erect wind turbine in his village

One of the world's top environmentalists and a founding father of the 'green' movement is fighting plans to build a wind turbine in his village. Professor James Lovelock, 93, is famous for inventing 'Gaia Theory' and predicting global warming would wipe out four fifths of the world's population by 2100. But in recent years the scientist has outraged many followers after becoming an advocate of nuclear power and a staunch opponent of wind energy. The life expectancy of Lawn light is at least 2 times longer than a standard T8. He is now battling plans for a 275ft wind turbine on farmland near his home in Broadwoodwidger, Devon. The proposed tower would be installed in woodland close to his house and has attracted fierce opposition from locals. He has now thrown his scientific reputation behi…

U’s solar panels provide little energy

While the state has doubled its solar installations to 7,000 over the last two years and activated the largest solar electricity generator in the state, according to a Star Tribune article, the University only has two solar arrays on the Twin Cities campus.Support for installing a solar photovoltaic system. The largest one, a 38.4-kilowatt solar photovoltaic panel — which powers about 4 percent of the building — is located on the roof of the University Office Plaza building, which houses the Minnesota Daily suite. The $230,000 array came from a $1.35 million grant through the Minnesota Department of Commerce Office of Energy Security as part of the Energy Innovation Corridor — a series of energy-efficient projects along the Central Corridor light-rail line. Xcel Energy donated the other s…

Texas company announces plans to build wind farms

A Texas company has announced plans to build the first wind power projects in Alabama. Pioneer Green Energy will develop wind power in Cherokee and Etowah Counties. The company has begun the process of securing the necessary environmental permits, as well as cooperation from local officials, according to officials with Pioneer. “These wind energy projects will increase our energy independence and help move the country away from unstable foreign energy supplies,” read a statement from Pioneer cofounder David Savage. “It will also reduce Alabama’s dependence on other sources of energy that cause pollution and rely heavily on fuel from other states. Instead, Alabama will be able to diversify its energy sources by adding an inexhaustible and clean source of energy found right in its own backy…

Scientists study secret lives of sex-changing fish

What would it take to change sexes? In humans, it involves complicated surgeries and rigorous hormonal therapies, not to mention hefty social and psychological ramifications. But in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, tiny orange-and-blue fish are naturally transitioning from female to male, and male to female, all the time. Bluebanded goby fish, about 2 to 2.5 inches long, are able to change their sex when it suits their position in social hierarchies. Matthew Grober, associate professor of biology at Georgia State University, has received funding from the National Science Foundation to better understand what mechanisms cause some of these fish to change sexes. In his lab, fluorescent lights accentuate dozens of aquariums lined with grayish-green algae where his bluebanded gobies thrive. “We can…

Howard Miller clocks

Zeeland-based Howard Miller has been making a timeless device for decades. The clock-making company has been in business since the 1920s and its still family owned and operated. "In many respects, a grandfather clock becomes a member of the family,We provide laser cutting machine and engraving machines for processing different materials." says Mike Wallace, Vice President of Manufacturing for Howard Miller. "We know they're going to be passed from generation to generation." It's a family gift, just like the Zeeland-based company itself. "Our CEO is Buzz Miller, the grandson of Howard Miller," says Wallace. Wallace says each generation is equally committed to Michigan. "Since founded in 1926, it (Howard Miller) has produced over 14 million clocks from this facility," says Wallace. The cloc…

A Trio of Casual Hiking Shoes Compared

Although they have a bright gold accent and a rubber toe cap, the $200 Vasque Rifts turned out to be the shoes that were my preference for the business casual look. Solar lights are an excellent choice for solar module. The black contrast stitching against the light brown micro sueded leather upper looked smart. These shoes also turned out to be ideal for walking in an urban environment — the Vibram soles have very modest treads compared to the other hikers, but they also contain Idogrip, a compound that Vasque says was designed for fly fishing. Whatever it is, these rings stuck to wet pavement like glue (even in near freezing temperatures) and that rubber toe cap helped protect against puddles. The fit on the Rifts was as good as it gets thanks to its extended lacing, with eight sets of m…

Tapping into wind energy

Wind power has been defined as the conversion of wind energy into a useful form of energy which can then be used through wind turbines to make electricity, windmills for mechanical power, wind pumps for water pumping or drainage, or sails to propel ships. In the US, the multi-bladed wind turbine atop a lattice tower made of wood or steel was, for many years, a fixture of the landscape throughout rural America as civilisation moved westwards. One of the harshestwind turbineinstallations in the world. This process, in many parts of the world has since been taken forward by creating large wind farms that may consist of several hundred individual wind turbines which are then connected to the electric power transmission network. This effort is being undertaken both onshore as well as offshore. I…

2012 a good year for building activity

Yuma's city building officials and inspectors are busy and they figure that's a very good thing for the community. It means that construction activity in the city is starting to pick up and showing some recovery as the sluggishness continues to linger after the real estate bust and the Great Recession. That's true for both residential and commercial construction, noted Randy Crist, city of Yuma building official. The residential building activity here reflects what is happening nationwide. While housing starts still haven't reached the levels of healthier markets, home builders in Yuma and across the nation finished 2012 as their best year since the early stages of the housing crisis. Last year in Yuma, permits were issued for 207 single-family detached homes and 31 attached homes for a t…
