it isn’t concentrated

I think I mentioned my youngest daughters penchant for berries a few posts ago. Well, maraschino cherries cause an even bigger problem around these parts. Not only does my littlest hover around any place maraschino cherries might even possibly be, like some sort of obsessive, stone-fruit deprived vulture, but my 6 year old is even worse Maggie Beauty. No, she doesn’t try to shove every cherry she can get to in her mouth, disregarding any human life barring her way, but I promise you that hearing “can I have all the cherries when you’re done shooting” a thousand times per minute during the entire duration of the drink prep and shoot is infinitely worse Home DesignHome Design. If you read the paragraph above, it’s probably pretty clear that this drink is a huge hit with kids iphone screen p…

Saveur Magazine's editorial

Today's a big day. For one, it's my brother's birthday - Happy Birthday Brother!! Two, I've got a week of vacation on the Outer Banks ahead of me (ahhh) and three, I'll be starting with Saveur Magazine's editorial team next week otterbox review! Ahhhhhh. Starting next week, a few days a week I'll be in their midtown office, pitching various stories, dreaming up cocktail recipes, and hopefully occasionally photographing for them! From the sounds of it, I'll get to wear a few different hats. It's crazy to think that just 6 months ago I was in Montpelier, Vermont, wearing chef's brigade and still unsure where I would be spending the upcoming year, and now, in just a week, I'll be throwing on a blazer and taking the subway into Saveur's Manhattan headquarters every week. Life, eh? Big and mys…

History through Fiction

While my palate could be much more refined than it is, there’s one thing that’s universal regardless of its cuisine of origin: bread. Flat or fluffy, soft or crunchy, bread in all its forms is wonderful. Years ago, I took a History through Fiction course that focused on books set in Eastern Asian countries. The concept was simple: learn a little bit about a culture by the books set in and written by authors who have lived it. Memoirs of a Geisha, Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee, The Ramayana and A Passage to India were just a few of the works we read. The instructor, a former member of the CIA, always had the best stories to tell. Because of her, I came very close to minoring in Asian Studies. What would I have done with that? I’m not sure. But she captured my interest and had me wanting to…

Moist Chocolate-Beet Cake

Moist Chocolate-Beet Cake It’s interesting reading some of the talk regarding if the internet is ready to replace cookbooks. Sure, there are people furiously clicking around wherever they can for a chocolate cake recipe. And there are hundreds of thousands of chocolate cake recipes that you can find using a search engine. But to me, that’s not enough. When I want to spend my precious time and funds making something to eat, I don’t want to merely find a recipe. There’s nothing compelling about a downloadable list of ingredients. It just leaves me cold. I want the author or writer to tell me about the recipe, what inspired them to create it, or how it came about wine searcher. I want to know why someone chose that recipe, what twists they gave it, what made the cake or casserole they were m…
