It is time to start looking ahead to the 2011 contest. We are also busy preparing for the upcoming Joop Swart Masterclass and celebrating the launch of a new book of photography from the Middle East.
David Burnett to chair the 2011 World Press Photo jury
We are proud to announce that photojournalist and founding member of Contact Press Images, David Burnett (USA), has accepted our invitation to chair the 2011 World Press Photo jury. Since he began working as an intern at Time magazine in 1967, Burnett has spent over 30 years building an impressive career, in which he covered various conflicts, the US presidential elections, every Summer Olympic Games since 1984 and much more. Getting ready for the 2011 contest
In less than two months, the 2011 World Press Photo contest will kick off. We will begin accepting submissions from 1 December 2010 through 13 January 2011, 23.59 CET (Central European Time). From 1 December you can request a user name and password for our web entry site through 7 January, 23.59 CET. Keep an eye on our website for further information.
17th Joop Swart Masterclass on the horizon
From 29 October to 4 November, 12 young photographers will gather in Amsterdam for the 17th annual Joop Swart Masterclass. The talented individuals come from five different continents and were selected from among 162 candidates. The participants will explore the theme Persistence while guided by six prominent figures in photojournalism. Biographies of the participants and masters, as well as a gallery previewing their photo essays, can be viewed online here.
Stories from the Middle East in print
On 5 October World Press Photo celebrated the launch of Hekayat: Picture stories from the Middle East. The publication contains work produced by six photographers who took part in a photography training program. The participants created photo stories around the theme of active citizenship. The book is bilingual in English and Arabic and can be ordered through the World Press Photo online bookstore. Read an article about the book launch and watch a multimedia production online.
The World Press Photo exhibition continues its worldwide tour
The World Press Photo exhibition will be on show at one of the premier cultural landmarks in London, the Royal Festival Hall at Southbank Centre from 12 November to 5 December.
We are also pleased to announce two new locations on the exhibition tour. For the first time, the exhibition can be seen in Zug, Switzerland from 23 October to 1 November and in Chicoutimi, Canada from 4 November to 28 November.
The final location of the Deutsche Bahn tour will open in Berlin, Germany on 15 October, wrapping up a nine-stop tour of Germany railway stations. Information about all of the World Press Photo exhibitions can be found on our exhibition calendar.
TNT continues its sponsorship of the exhibition in Brussels
For the fourth year, TNT will sponsor the exhibition in Brussels, Belgium. The exhibition will be on show at the Musée du Cinquantenaire from 12 November to 28 November.
