Why is 'x' the unknown?

We all have been asked for many times to find 'x'. Some of us are still trying to find it. Have you ever wondered why x, not s or z ? And why do we relate everything that is unknown to x such as xproject, xfile etc ? Why x is the unknown? Here is the simple answer :)
