«We want to make it even better».

At present, many areas are almost completely restored, there are others where much more remains to be done. This applies most to the Lower 9th District. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, its population was 99% African American, it was the area with the highest in the city index of private households. All its inhabitants were forced to leave. Water from the streets of this district was pumped out in the last place. Today, only 40% of families have returned to their homes. Through a dam built on an industrial canal, during the hurricane, most of the water hit the Lower 9th district. Powerful flows washed away some houses from the foundations and moved them to several blocks. And yet the area is gradually recovering. Arthur Johnson works at the Center for Sustainable Interaction and Development. His organization plays a key role in the restoration of the Lower 9th District. However, some would prefer not to restore this area at all. Outside experts said that it would be better to make a green zone here - a park or wetlands - while forgetting about the thousands of families that lived here for generations. What's the difference - they will still flood. But those who stayed in the Lower 9th District are ready to stand until the end. "We will not allow them to take our homes, our heritage, our culture - it's like pulling our hearts out of our hearts and saying:" It's okay, just move, "says Arthur. To restore the Lower 9th District the task is not from the lungs - the work is slower than in other parts of the city. Previously there were seven schools, now only one. The nearest grocery store is a few miles away. "We work hard and overcome difficulties not just to make our district the way it was before Katrina - we want to make it even better," assures Arthur Johnson. Decrease old-timers here, but many young people who came to New Orleans after the hurricane Katrina as volunteers fell in love with this city and decided to stay.
