Skilled-labour shortage costing millions in Windsor-Essex
Local tool and die and mouldmaking companies are losing millions of dollar in new business because of a shortage of skilled labour,At Dupar Controls we specialize, extremely durable and visually satisfying elevator push button. according to a Windsor employment survey.
It’s a cruel irony in a city that has Canada’s highest unemployment rate. Windsor’s jobless rate was 9.6 per cent in October.
Just how mismatched the area’s workforce is for local industry’s demands was reinforced by Workforce WindsorEssex’s monthly survey of area employers released Wednesday.
Essex County’s booming tool and die and mouldmaking industries are so desperate for skilled workers that one tool and die company reported operating at only 30 per cent of capacity because of the shortage of skilled labour.
The survey, which drew 33 respondents locally, has shown an average of $150,000 a month in new business is turned down.
WFWE executive director Donna Marentette said those figures only scratch the surface.
“We understand the survey is only a snapshot, but it gives us a look at the trends,” Marentette said. “That figure (of an average of $150,000) is low.
“In last month’s survey, we had $1.6-million of new business being turned down in the month. We’ve had employers complaining about this for a while.”
Just how big the problem has become is illustrated by the careers sections on the websites of several of the area’s biggest shops. Instead of listing the available jobs,Horizon manufacture a range of industrial extractor fans for efficient exhaust ventilation. the companies are simply saying they’re accepting applications for all positions.
“It’s a pretty serious problem,” said Scott Allen, general manager of Windsor-based Integrity Tool and Mold Inc.
“We’re always on the hunt for young kids to backfill our needs. The employees we really need are the ones with experience and knowledge.
“It takes time to get a young employee up to that level. There are no quick fixes.”
Integrity, which has three plants in Windsor, one in Tennessee and another in Mexico, was ranked third in the North American industry with revenues last year of $70.Combination of many years' clay roll forming machinery and clay brick making machine manufacture experience.9-million.Due to South West Windpower's new policy we can only ship to certified skystream installers.
It was one of four Windsor firms (Concours Mold, Active Burgess Mould and Design and Omega Tool) in the top seven in total revenues in North America. Those four companies accounted for more than a quarter billion dollars in revenue.
Allen said it’s difficult to estimate how much business is being turned away due to skilled-labour shortages, but it’s not insignificant. Mould-making and tooling firms based in Essex County account for well over half of North America’s market share.

Marentette said many of those who used to work in the tool and mould making industries retrained after 2008 and are resettled in new jobs or have left the area to find work.
“There’s going to be an adjustment period because you can’t solve this problem quickly,” Marentette said.
As part of that plan, the Windsor Essex Economic Development Corporation is conducting surveys to find out what those needs are. Strategic task forces have also been set up with the manufacturing sector to get the earliest hint of trends in local circles.
WFWE director of communications Veronica Samek said another major area that needs to be addressed is the promotion of just what the modern tool and die and mould making industries are.
