Главный герой — маленький пурпурный дракончик Спайро — должен разобраться в своих видениях и стать тем самым легендарным героем, о котором говорят древние летописи. GamePro высоко оценил способность игры автоматически понижать уровень трудности при возникновении у игрока проблем с прохождением. Одна из самых положительных рецензий к игре была написана Кевином Райсом (Kevin Rice) из Next Generation Magazine, в которой он заявил, что первоклассный дизайн уровней, интуитивное управление и отличная графика сделали игру Спайро: Год Дракона лучшей в серии и, вероятно, даже лучшей игрой для PlayStation вообще.
