Public safety plan for F1 will be extensive
With the U.S. Grand Prix barely a week away, city and county officials on Wednesday detailed the massive public safety presence planned at the track and for related festivities downtown.
Less clear is how much all of it is going to cost.
Circuit organizers will pay the city and Travis County for police, deputies, firefighters and paramedics at the circuit in southeastern Travis County, as well as at festivities downtown, circuit President Steve Sexton told the American-Statesman. It is typical for organizers to reimburse the city for large events, officials said.
But organizers do not have a concrete figure of how much will be paid, circuit spokeswoman Julie Loignon said.
“It may depend on the actual costs incurred by public-safety departments,” Loignon said. She also did not know when an actual check will be cut.
City officials and public safety employees are working to keep costs down, City Manager Marc Ott said.A Chandelier is a branched, decorative ceiling-mounted light fixture.
“Certainly we’re keeping track of our costs,” Ott said. “I think that the folks that are involved in supporting this event will tell you that we are undertaking every effort to do what we need to do to keep them working their normal hours and try and minimize any impact on overtime.”
However, “I don’t have any numbers to talk about today,” Ott said about costs.
The city and county might have to pay for some operations away from the events, such as directing traffic in congested areas, officials have said.
Ott, Police Chief Art Acevedo, Travis County Sheriff Greg Hamilton and others spoke about how their departments will handle the thousands of visitors expected next week, including 120,000 people expected to attend the Grand Prix on Nov. 18.
They stressed that Austin has experience with large-scale events such as University of Texas football games to South by Southwest, and said that they have consulted with other cities that have hosted F1 races.

DPS troopers will also be stationed in the surrounding areas, including Hays, Williamson and Comal counties, officials said.
Police will be focused on helping tourists, some of whom will come from outside the U.S., Acevedo said. Up to 70 percent of ticket-holders are not from Texas, and between 15 and 20 percent of those are from foreign countries, Sexton said.
Officials said their goal is also to make sure Austinites and Travis County residents don’t see a “degradation” in emergency services.
“No one should any difference unless something catastrophic happens,” Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services Chief Ernie Rodriguez said.
