Teaching Online: Reflections on Practice

Designing and facilitating online courses with a diverse student population is a challenge for new, as well as experienced online instructors. This course invites your critical reflection on the methods of online instruction; beliefs and potential bias of the online learner; policies and rules and how they align with course objectives; tone and the purpose of communication. We’ve collected readings and experiences of practice from online instructors and students to provide a foundation for discussion. The decisions they have made will help us make similar or, upon reflection, different choices for ourselves and our students.
Instructional Design for Mobile Learning

This course introduces participants to instructional design principles for teaching with mobile technology. Mobile technology is a growing and powerful trend; what opportunities does this trend present to those who design online learning? How can we leverage the affordances of mobile technology in ways that make sense for our teaching methods and student learning?
To answer these questions, participants will explore designing and integrating mobile learning into a course; pedagogies for teaching with mobile technology; a framework for mobile learning design strategies and simple and apps for creating mobile content and instruction. Participants will also have the opportunity to attend virtual events facilitated by mobile learning designers and practitioners. The course will feature a short mobile to demonstrating one method of delivering mobile learning. By the end of the course, participants should have experienced a few methods to leverage and integrate mobile teaching and learning in their own courses.

Gaming Literacy and Learning

The use of games in educational contexts has recently received growing attention. Many teachers are interested in using games in their classrooms, but can’t find a right context to adopt games that match their curriculum. This course provides an introduction to the educational value of games, game genres, gaming literacy, and new literacy. Teachers will play games and analyze how gaming can cultivate learners’ new literacy, understand how game debriefing can help scaffold students’ learning, and identify factors affecting the adoption of games in educational contexts.
This course is facilitated by a literacy professor and an instructional technology professor, who will be available to assist and encourage you to implement game-based learning into your classroom.

Foundations of Teaching for Learning 3: Learners and Learning
The teacher’s work becomes meaningful when it is informed by research and theories of learning, and their relationship to actual practice. This course provides an opportunity for you to identify and understand students’ expectations and prior learning.
Foundations of Virtual Instruction
This course introduces teachers to virtual instruction. We will cover fundamental knowledge needed by teachers to succeed in a technology-dependent, instructional environment. Students will explore the history of online learning and understand how a variety of delivery models are evolving in the k-12 environment, ranging from completely online to hybrid or blended classrooms. Together we will explore how the programs work and who they serve, address basic equity issues, access and school funding, as well as ethical and legal issues that support and challenge these models. Upon completion of this course, you will understand what it takes to transition from teaching in the classroom to providing virtual instruction. This is the first of a four course series.
K-12 Blended & Online Learning
The course is designed to introduce K-12 teachers and the community to blended and online learning. In the first 4 weeks of the course learners will gain introductory knowledge of K12 blended and online teaching and learning. During the last 4 weeks learners will use this new knowledge to start designing and developing effective K12 blended and online learning experiences for K12 students. The course content was developed based on standards written by the International Association for K12 Online Learning (iNACOL).

Powerful Tools for Teaching and Learning: Digital Storytelling
Powerful Tools for Teaching and Learning: Digital Storytelling introduces educators to digital storytelling and explores ways to use digital stories to enhance students’ learning experience. The course is designed to be comprehensive yet fundamental. By comprehensive we mean that the course provides a solid foundation to all of the components of a digital story and illustrates these components with tutorials, example stories and links to additional readings. The course also provides a hands-on opportunity for learners to create their own digital stories. The course is fundamental because it covers the basic process of creating a digital story starting with just a simple script and as little as one still image. This course is intended for K-12 teachers in all disciplines, although it is open to anyone with an interest in digital storytelling. Course participants will use WeVideo, a free web-based video editing program to create a digital story that could be shared online and with students in the classroom. Teachers in the state of Texas may be eligible to receive Continuing Education Units if they complete the major requirements of the course.
