Hurricane Katrina: survivors ready to let go

On the 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, survivors of the storm gathered in New Orleans to look back and look ahead with the city's mayor and former President Bill Clinton. Denise Nicholas Jackson, the Hurricane Katrina's survivor:

I'm displaced person from the New Orleans. I was born and raised here and i spent 40 some years living here. I love the city.

Love for home is why Denise Nicholas Jackson came from Houston to mark the 10th anniversary of Katrina. The New Orleans native lost her house in the storm. So did Barbara Manual forced to leave for four months before returning home to st. Bernard Parish. Tonight both women decided to attend a special commemoration to reflect and remember.

"And I believe this is the 10 year and I think we'll let Katrina go and gone with the future" said Barbara Manual

The event hosted by Soledad O'Brien featured local sounds from John Boutte rebirth brass band, Warren Easton charter hight school's marching band and the Mardi Gras Indians.

Tonight's theme heard again and again focused on the city's resilience. Mayor Mitch Landriew said:

Some people said that we couldn't come back. Some people said that it was never ever ever gonna happen, that nobody nobody could come back from the tragedy of so epic propotions. And here we are, 10 years later still standing.

The final speaker taking the stage, former president Bill Clinton who helped raise more than 130 million dollars after Katrina to help with recovery efforts in the region.

We honor on this night in a solumn way those who lost their lives and those who love them. We are in a grateful way on this night of people who often at great risk to themselves, save lives over and over and over again.
