Interpretive essay outline

In the process of considering approaches to the description and the works of well-known theorists in the field of psychological research were analyzed - B. G. Ananyev, S. L. Rubinshtein, M. S. Rogovin and G. V. Zalevsky.

From the point of view of B. G. Ananyev, methods are systems of operations with psychological objects and at the same time epistemological objects of psychological science. He distinguished four groups of :

Group I - organization. They include the comparative method (comparison of different groups by age, activity, etc.); longitudinal(multiple examinations of the same persons due to the long period of time); complex (representatives of different sciences are involved in the study; however, as a rule, one object is studied by different means).

Group II - empirical m., including: observation and self-observation; experimental m., psychodiagnostic m., sociometry, interviews, conversation), analysis of activity products, biographical m..

Group III - data processing m., including: quantitative (statistical) and qualitative (material differentiation into groups, analysis) m.

Group IV - interpretative m-ds, including genetic (material analysis in terms of development with the release of individual phases, stages, critical moments, etc.) and structural (establishes structural links between all personality characteristics) m-s.

Ananiev described in detail each of the m-s, but with all the thoroughness of his argumentation, many unsolved problems remain: How do practical methods differ from a field experiment or instrumental observation? Why is the group of interpretation m-s separated from organizational ones?

It is important to note that in this classification theoretical are not indicated, but at the same time a class of m-s “intermediate” in status between empirical and theoretical, namely, m-ds of presenting, processing and interpreting data of empirical research, is highlighted.

There are other approaches to the description and classification of m-s of psychological research, but almost always a sign of identity is put between empirical m-ds of psychological research and psychological m-ds in general, which makes it difficult to determine the specifics of both.

It is advisable, by analogy with other sciences, to distinguish three classes of methods in psychology:

1. Empirical, under which external real interaction takes place.

2. The subject and object of study.

3. Theoretical, when the subject interacts with the mental model of the object (more precisely, the subject of study).

4. Interpretation and description, in which the subject “externally” interacts with the symbolic-symbolic representation of the object (graphs, tables, charts).

The result of applying the first group of methods is the data that fixes the state of the object, readings of instruments, states of the subject, computer memory, activity products, etc.

The result of applying theoretical methods is represented by knowledge of the subject in the form of a natural language, sign-symbolic, or spatial-schematic.

Finally, interpretation-descriptive methods are the “meeting place” of the results of applying theoretical and experimental methods and the place of their interaction. The data of empirical research, on the one hand, are subjected to primary processing and presentation in accordance with the requirements set for the results from the organizers of the study of the theory, model, inductive hypothesis.

On the other hand, there is an interpretation of these data in terms of competing concepts for compliance with the hypotheses results.
