FIFA 21 Will Support Free Next-Gen Upgrade

Electronic Arts confirmed the inevitable FIFA 21 at its EA Play showcase today. As with most EA games, it's coming to Steam, and has a release date of October 3.

The next instalment was unveiled via a trailer shared with the previously-announced Madden NFL 21. According to EA, this year's game will benefit from the impending release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox One X. In particular, if you play using a DualSense controller, be prepared for some advanced haptic feedback. There's also a "new deferred lighting system," more detailed player models, and spatialized audio technology.

People who pre-order the game will be able to play the game three days earlier than anyone who waits for the physical release. FIFA 21 early access begins on Tuesday October 6 and allows the compete game to be downloaded to your console to play the full game ahead of its release. Anyone who has EA Access on PS4 or Xbox One and Origin Access on PC will be able to avail of the Play First Trials on Thursday, October 1, more than a full week ahead of the official release of FIFA 21. Meanwhile, EA Sports said FIFA 21 on PC will be the same version as released on PS4 and Xbox One, so it sounds like PC is being left behind this year as the game transitions to the next-gen consoles. But, EA Sports did confirm FIFA 21 will launch on Steam as well as Origin on PC, making it the first game in the series to do so.

There's a Stadia version of FIFA 21, too, although EA Sports said it will reveal more on that later this year. And finally, the Nintendo Switch version is the FIFA 21 Legacy Edition, which includes the latest kits and squad updates for the upcoming season, updated presentation for in-game menus and broadcast overlays, but no new game modes or gameplay innovations.
