Сама игра насыщенна элементами ретрофутуризма, основанного на представлении о будущем американцев 1950-х, доставшегося ей еще от первых частей, в частности играет популярная музыка того времени, люди одеваются в одежду той эпохи, внешний вид роботов и брони схож с тем, что можно увидеть в иллюстрациях фантастов 1950-х годов. Однако в игру перекочевал и главный страх того времени — страх перед ядерной войной, когда простые мирные граждане не без оснований боялись ядерного конфликта и последствий после него, а по всей стране строились противоатомные бомбоубежища.
Игра огонь! Возможно проблема в этом, но я играл и в более современные игры, чем 2010 года. Многие люди не реагировали на предупредительные сирены, считая их тренировочными. Все убежища (кроме 12-го) закрылись и значительная часть тех, кто имел туда доступ, не смогли спастись. Американское правительство на время войны укрылось на нефтедобывающей вышке «Посейдон Ойл» в Тихом Океане, пережив таким образом войну. Платформа и правительство впоследствии стали известны как Анклав. Те, кто выжил без помощи убежищ, из оставшихся после войны средств создали небольшие поселения и города.
23 октября 2008 года компания Microsoft объявила, что из-за религиозных и социальных причин игра не будет выпущена в Индии на платформе Xbox 360.
