It might be difficult to believe, but there are million opportunities out there for those who want to achieve something, to succeed in his/her life. Just use it. Here is one of the examples.
When we have learned about Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSIs) Women’s Leadership Program for Student Leaders, it was just a ‘five-week program for foreign undergraduate female students that emphasizes exploration and development of women’s leadership and role in the society’. We did not know that these five weeks would change our lives irreversibly.
In one of the introductory meetings, we were told that the aim of this program was to challenge us, young leaders, mentally, physically, emotionally. Well, ‘challenge accepted’.

Атлант мұхитының үстімен өмірлерінде бірінші рет ұшып өткен біздер үшін Американың есігі Вашингтон қаласымен ашылды. Президент Резиденциясы, Вашингтон Монументі, Линколн және Мартин Лютер Кинг Мемориалдарымен қатар “Арыстан Патша” мюзиклін көрдік. АҚШ мемлекеттік департаменті ұйымдастырған конференцияда Афганистан, Мали, Сьер Лион және басқа 22 мемлекеттен келген студенттерді кездестірдік. Әр мемлекеттегі әйелдердің қоғамдағы рөлі мен қарсыласып жатқан мәселелерді талқылап, шешу жолдарын қарастырдық. Мәдениет фестивалінде болса, біз Қазақстанның терең тарихы мен бай мәдениетін таныстырып қана қоймай, өзге мемлекеттердің мәдениетімен таныс болдық. Әрине, қазіргі уақытқа дейін араласып жүрген жаңа достарды таптық.
Our learning process has started in Washington D.C., where we did not only enjoy the sights of the city, such as White House, Capitol, Monument of Washington, Lincoln, and Martin Luther King, and got lucky to see musical “The Lion King”, but also had a chance to meet with people working in the U.S. Department of State and all participants of SUSI 2014 from 22 countries, including Afghanistan, Mali, Sierra Leone, etc. It was a unique chance to learn about problems women face around the world, to share experience with our counterparts, and to discuss what can be done in order to help to each other. During the cultural festival, we did not only make ourselves familiar with cultural richness of their countries but also talked to them about Kazakhstan and our culture as well. Of course, we made a lot of new friends with whom we still keep in touch.

Келесі төрт аптаны біз Грин Ривер Коммюнити Колледжінде Американың тарихын, демократияны, мәдени революцияларды, әйелдер құқығын үйреніп, шешендік сөз өнерін дамытып, әртүрлі тренингтерге қатыстық.
During the next four weeks we stayed in the Green River Community College learning about the U.S history, democracy, civil rights movements, cultural revolutions, women’s rights in American history, women’s issues, practiced public speaking skills and participated in trainings.

As a result, we have learned not only about the US but also how to understand ourselves and listen to each other, solve conflicts, and help others. We would recommend “The Anatomy of Peace” by the Arbinger Institute to all who wants to make our world a better place. Believe us, it is possible.

Нағыз көшбасшы тек көпті білетін адам емес, өз қорқынышын жеңіп, “комфорт зонасынан” шыға білетін адам. Өзен рафтингі, каякинг, зип-лайнинг және Зумба секілді жаттығулар бізді батылырақ болуға үйретті.
A strong leader is not the one who can just read a lot but one who can overcame his/her fears, to get out of the comfort zone. We all have already travelled to another part of the world, so we were not afraid of dancing Zumba or doing river rafting (even in the raining day) or kayaking. However, zip-lining in the Northwest Trek was quite challenging for some of us.

Бұл өңірде әр дүйсенбі күні тамаққа мұқтаж болған адам келе алады екен. Орталық Азия мемлекеттерінен келген қатысушылар болғанымыз үшін барлығымызға ортақ Палау тағамын даярладық. Тағамымызды ұнатқан секілді.

One of the most important part of the program was learning about servant leadership and actually experiencing it.
For example, we prepared and served meal for more than 100 people Auburn Community Supper in the 1st United Methodist Church. They provide a hot meal for anyone who is hungry every Monday. As representatives of the Central Asia, we prepared plov and it seemed that they liked it!
We also helped in the Auburn Food Bank which is the part of the U.S. leading domestic hunger-relief charity. They accept donation in the form of food or cash and help families and individuals who are in need.
Why don’t we have anything like this in Kazakhstan?!

Environmental consciousness is one of the distinctive features of the American culture. Therefore, environmental leadership is as important there as any other types of leadership.
Taking our first steps in this sphere, we helped to pool out the weeds and protect small trees from elks in the Northwest Trek. We also installed a couple of benches so that tourists could be able enjoy the beauty of the nature in the Leavenworth area which, as the gateway to the Cascade Mountains, attracts many people every year.

So, what does a leading woman look like? Now, we know the answer. Each woman we have met there is just amazing. Here, just a couple of examples.

Helen Thayer was named "One of the Great Explorers of the 20th Century" by National Geographic and NPR.

Suzette Cooke. Mayor of the City of Kent. She works with a seven-member city council and over 600 city employees. Her doors are always open for any person who wants to talk to her. Very active, energetic, and strong woman.

Kim Wyman. Secretary of Washington State. She is the second female Secretary of State in Washington history and the only woman in statewide executive office. This woman is just incredible!

Finally, we met so many people who shared with us their stories which inspired and motivated us, we had a chance to live in the American families and talk to local people. I am sure that each participant has unforgettable memories about this program. We already miss all people who were there for us.
