# Metaphor, simile, metonymy and personification

> On the last lecture we talked about metaphor, simile, metonymy and personification. I would like to ...

On the last lecture we talked about metaphor, simile, metonymy and personification. I would like to tell about simile, metaphor and personification.

***Simile....***

*A simile is a figure of speech that indirectly compares two different things by employing the words "like" or "as".*

*

*For example: She ran like the wind. Explanation: Running and the wind are unlike things. When you compare the speed of running to the speed of the wind, you are using a simile.*

***Metaphor...***

Metaphor – transference of the characteristics of one phenomenon to another, showing likeness/similarity in things that are basically different (without using “as” or “like”). A metaphor states that a = b. It is an expressive characterization of an object.

For example: Time is money.

For example: You are my sunshine. (You=Sunshine). Reagan is a silly monkey when she is playing. (Reagan=Monkey)

***Types of metaphor.***

**Trite metaphors **are metaphors that fixed in dictionaries as expressive means of language.

F.e. a shadow of a smile
