Абсолютно все игры, на протяжении тысячелетий изобретенные человечеством, использовались для того, чтобы делать ставки и выигрывать. Даже невинные "крестики-нолики", изобретенные в Западной Европе примерно в XI веке, изначально были азартной игрой. Азартные игры стали неотъемлемой частью цивилизации и одним из наиболее распространенных человеческих пороков.

# История возникновения азартных игр 2300 год до н. э. Первое письменное упоминание об азартной игре - ставки на скачках (Китай).

# 7 век до н. э. Обнаружены первые кубики с нанесенными цифрами. Возможно, они использовались для игры в кости.

# 5 век до н. э. В Греции впервые сформулированы правила тотализатора.

# I век до н. э. В Риме устраиваются первые лотереи. В Китае начато использование лотерей для сбора средств в казну (на строительство Великой Китайской стены).

# I век н. э. Римский император Клавдий играет в "Табулу" (ныне эта игра известна как "Нарды").

# 1371 год. В Испании изобретены карты. В Италии начато использование карт "Таро".

# 1530 год. Во Флоренции появляются цифровые лотереи (каждый билет имел персональный номер, который определялся по жребию) с денежными призами.

# 1600-е годы. Во Франции изобретена рулетка. Традиция называет "отцом рулетки" известного математика Блеза Паскаля, хотя существуют сведения, что рулетка ранее появилась в Китае или Индии.

Возможно, история возникновения лотерей уходит в Древнюю Грецию, где, согласно мифу, воины тянули из шлема камушки, один из которых давал право сразиться с Зевсом. Это была своеобразная лотерея - или умереть, или остаться живым.

Первые упоминания о лотереях в Европе относятся к V веку, когда города Бургундии и Бельгии стремились таким образом собрать необходимые деньги на укрепление своей обороны или для оказания помощи беднякам.

В истории лотерей есть очень интересная легенда:

1559-й год был, по сути, первый год правления Елизаветы I - королевы Англии, женщины с необычайно яркой биографией. Сама же Англия в то время была очень слаба, прежде всего, в военном и экономическом отношении, находясь фактически в блокаде. И чтобы развязать этот узел, политики предлагали только одно средство – как можно быстрее удачно выдать королеву замуж. И даже круг претендентов назывался – Филипп II, король Испании; эрцгерцоги Австрии Карл и Фредерик; Эрик XIV, король Швеции; Генрих, герцог Анжуйский, будущий король Франции; Франсуа, герцог Аленсонский и ряд других. Самая колоритная фигура в этом списке – русский царь Иван Грозный, который был старше Елизаветы всего-то на 3 года…

Однако Елизавета оказалась дамой с характером (и без того часть ее подданных за глаза называли ее мужиком в юбке) и заявила: «Замуж покуда не собираюсь, а как поправить финансовые дела государства, знаю».
