В 1957 году вскоре после запуска СССР искусственного спутника Земли Министерство обороны США посчитало, что в случаи реальной войны Америки с Советским союзом, первой нужна надёжная система передачи информации. Агентство передовых оборонных исследовательских проектов США (DARPA) мгновенно предложило разработать для этого локальную компьютерную сеть. Разработка этой сети была поручена ведущим университетам страны: Калифорнийскому университету в Лос-Анджелесе, Университету штата Юта, Стэнфордскому исследовательскому центру и Университету штата Калифорния в Санта-Барбаре.

В 1969 году поставленная задача была выполнена и в Соединенных штатах появилась первая компьютерная сеть ARPAnet (англ. Advanced Research Projects Agency Network - дословно Сеть агенства научно-исследовательских проектов), объединяющая компьютерные центры министерства обороны и ряда академических организаций. Основная задача, стоящая перед ARPAnet, заключалась главным образом в изучении того, как поддерживать связь в случае ядерного нападения и для помощи исследователям в обмене информацией. По мере роста этой сети создавались и развивались многие другие сети. Еще до наступления эры персональных компьютеров создатели ARPAnet приступили к разработке программы Internetting Project ("Проект объединения сетей"). Успех этого проекта стал уже в то время очевидным. Во-первых, была создана крупнейшая в США сеть internet (со строчной буквы i). Во-вторых, были опробованы различные варианты взаимодействия этой локальной сети с рядом других сетей в США.

Это создало предпосылки для успешной интеграции многих сетей в единую мировую сеть. В настоящее время "сеть сетей" теперь называют Internet (Interconnected Networks — соединённые сети).
