«Господь создал людей разными, а полковник Кольт сделал их равными». Согласно легенде, именно эта фраза выбита на надгробии выдающегося оружейника.

На самом же деле, на могильной плите кроме фамилии и дат жизни нет ничего. Да и можно ли было себе представить, что пуританин, уроженец богобоязненной Новой Англии, уподобит себя Господу Богу. Сама поговорка появилась после гражданской войны в США (1861 – 1865), да и звучала тогда она несколько иначе: «Авраам Линкольн дал людям свободу, а полковник Кольт уравнял их шансы».

Завод по производству револьверов был основан Сэмюэлем Кольтом в 1837 году. Однако его продукция не пользовалась особым спросом. Американские генералы утверждали, что револьвер не экономичен – «стреляет слишком быстро, патронов не напасешься». Поэтому спустя 5 лет завод пришлось закрыть. Револьверы оценили по достоинству лишь ковбои, рейнджеры, да бандиты, чья продолжительность жизни напрямую зависела от скорости стрельбы. Идеей Кольта воспользовались конкуренты – компания «Смит и Вессон». Пока завод Кольта был закрыт, они наладили выпуск собственных револьверов. Но их револьверы были тяжелы и часто давали осечки, зато стоили в два раза дешевле.

Об изобретении Кольта вспомнили только в 1847 году, во время подготовки к войне с Мексикой. Но истинным триумфом изобретателя, принесшим ему славу и деньги, стала гражданская война в США. Если в войне с Мексикой использовалось около 1000 револьверов, то в гражданской войне счет шел на десятки тысяч стволов. При этом изобретением Кольта пользовались как южане, так и северяне. До того, как Кольт стал эксклюзивным поставщиком армии северных Штатов, он успел построить несколько оружейных заводов в южных Штатах.

Но дожить до конца войны, изобретателю было не суждено. Он скончался в 1862 году в возрасте 47 лет, как писали газеты «от естественных причин».
