Language learning and bilingualism have long fascinated linguists, leading to the investigation of various linguistic phenomena arising at the intersection of two languages. One such phenomenon is congruent lexemes, which refers to words that share phonetic or graphic similarities across different languages while differing in meaning. This article aims to delve into the concept of congruent lexemes, their implications for language learning, and the potential for language interference. In this article we will give you a brief overview of the research works that are conducted at the Department of Turkology, the Faculty of Philology of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.

Defining Congruent Lexemes:

Congruent lexemes are words from two different languages that exhibit similarity in at least one component of their expression, such as pronunciation or spelling, while possessing distinct meanings. For example, in English and Kazakh, the word "bet" has identical spelling and similar pronunciation, but it carries different meanings in each language. These congruent lexemes can create opportunities for language interference and pose challenges for language learners.

Next, we will give the examples of congruent lexemes that you may have heard or seen in your everyday life:

The popular Kazakh podcast, called "DopeSoz". The word "dope" here is a congruent lexeme, that sounds very similar in English and Kazakh languages: dope and дөп.

A number of songs by Ninety One: "Why'm", "All I Need", "Lie", "Boyman". These songs are really great example of using congruent lexemes in wordplay. The titles of these songs have two meanings: different in two languages.

The Role of Congruent Lexemes in Language Transfer:

Congruent lexemes can serve as valuable tools for studying language transfer, which refers to the influence of a person's first language on their second language. Research has shown that the presence of congruent lexemes can lead to transfer effects, where the meaning of a word in one language is transferred to the same word in another language. Bilingual individuals may inadvertently use a congruent lexeme from their native language with its specific meaning, resulting in potential misunderstandings in the target language.

Implications for Language Learning:

Understanding congruent lexemes and their potential for language interference can significantly impact language teaching and learning methodologies. Educators can utilize contrastive analysis to highlight differences in meaning and usage between congruent lexemes, enabling learners to develop a more nuanced understanding of vocabulary in the target language. By raising awareness of potential pitfalls and promoting cross-linguistic sensitivity, learners can improve their ability to navigate congruent lexemes and minimize language interference.

Teaching Strategies for Congruent Lexemes:

To effectively teach congruent lexemes, instructors can employ various strategies. Comparative charts can be used to visually illustrate the similarities and differences between congruent lexemes in both languages. This visual aid helps learners develop a clear understanding of the distinctions in meaning and usage. Practice exercises and activities, such as sentence completion, translation tasks, and role-playing, can provide opportunities for learners to apply their knowledge of congruent lexemes in context and reinforce their understanding.

Conclusion:

Congruent lexemes present both challenges and opportunities in language learning. Their presence can lead to language interference, where the meaning of a word from one language is mistakenly transferred to another. However, through effective teaching strategies that emphasize contrastive analysis and contextual practice, learners can navigate congruent lexemes with greater accuracy and proficiency. By raising awareness of the potential for interference, educators can empower learners to overcome language transfer challenges and enhance their overall language proficiency.
