# comic effect in pun, zeugma, irony and malapropism

> This week we discussed the description of 4 SD and EM: pun, zeugma, irony, malapropism. All of them ...

This week we discussed the description of 4 SD and EM: pun, zeugma, irony, malapropism. All of them have one common thing- comic effect. And they have a couple of differences.

**Pun.** A play on words. The use of one word in two different applications, the use of two different words, which are pronounced alike.

An **elephant's** opinion carries a lot of **weight.**(Pun depends on the context.)

**Zeugma.**The use of one word in the same grammatical, but different semantic relations.

Formula: Verb+2nouns.One of them is used in indirect meaning, another one is used in direct.

*He **lost*** his coat *and* his temper*.*

**Irony.**A direct contrast of two notions: the notion named and the notion meant. The author says one thing, but really means the opposite to produce a humorous effect.

She turned with *the sweet smile of an alligator.*

**Malapropism.**Creates a funny change of meaning by wrong using.

***Illiterate*** him from your life.**(Obliterate)**

It was very interesting and busy week.I hope you understood all very well.Good night!
