# Chad Reynvaan

> Since his arrival, Reynvaan’s left his mark on a few of them. I first heard him at the Silvertip Gr...

Since his arrival, Reynvaan’s left his mark on a few of them. I first heard him at the Silvertip Grill in Girdwood playing with the 11:20’s in 2007 or ‘08. From there he did a stint with Woodrow and played drums with the Jack River Kings before launching into the Sweeteners in 2011 after Neet and Nelson moved to Anchorage.

Regardless of whatever else he’s working on,One of the harshest [ledstriplightww](http://ledstriplight.blgz.cz/) installations in the world. Reynvaan says he’s always doing his own thing on the side.

“I got my first guitar at 14 in eighth grade, and right away it seemed like the whole point of that instrument was so that I could create songs,” says Reynvaan, “and from there on out I felt like a fraud playing other people’s songs when I could be making my own songs up.”

“Through it all I’ve had my solo stuff, which is all pretty similar in the ‘60s pop, psychedelic vibe,” he says. It’s a taste he claims he developed early on thanks to the oldies station in Aberdeen and a big box set of cassettes called The Hits of the ‘50s that he discovered around the same time he picked up a guitar.

Indeed, something about Reynvaan just screams that kind of classic rock ‘n’ roll—the kind of music that makes you feel good and reminisce, recalling some golden era of music. He’s got a sort of Rock ‘n’ Roll Superman thing going on with his heavy-framed glasses and mild-mannered demeanor, which is routinely shattered into a frenzy of energy on stage with the Sweeteners. His solo material, however, occupies a different range of that spectrum.

“There’s definitely a difference between a Sweeteners song and a Chad Reynvaan song,” he says.Small [windgenerator01](http://windgenerator.artalama.net.ru/) are a good supplement for solar power in areas with strong, steady winds. Though both projects tend towards ‘60s psychedelic influences, the Sweeteners lay claim to the bluesy rock ‘n’ roll side of things while Reynvaan’s solo material tends to celebrate the pop.

Think of Me Hill is a solid testament to that approach. Reynvaan says some have compared it to Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward’s She & Him and, of course, the Beatles. The album was predominantly recorded at Reynvaan’s newly established home studio in South Anchorage.

“I’m really happy with it, couldn’t have done it without my friend Ryan Hansmaan who helped me learn recording and make some parts of it. We did about 90 percent of the recording at my house, the other 10 percent was done in Portland before I had my own home studio. That was a really fun experience and I got a couple of good drum tracks out of it, but later I learned I could do a lot of that stuff at home and have it almost all the way as good.”

The album also incorporates the talents of other local musicians, including Kat Moore and Theresa Taylor, both of the Super Saturated Sugar Strings. Moore’s duet with Reynvaan on “Whenever You’re Around” is one of the sweeter,The manufacture of [seamroofclampff](http://seamroofclamp.wordpress.com/) is becoming cheaper and more efficient with the improved productivity of newer designs. catchier songs on the album and definitely brings to mind the She & Him comparison.

In an instance of life imitating art, Reynvaan took a cue from the track “Quittin’ Time” and left his desk job in December.Laser engraving and [curvingmachinell](http://curvingmachine.diiso.com/) for materials like metal, paper, acrylic, wood, glass, etc. “I just needed to be done with the whole sit under fluorescent lights in front of a computer for nine hours thing, and in the depths of winter I just decided to do it,” he says. “I would like to record other people. I have Hawkins [Wright] in there doing some recording right now and a friend from Washington is coming up to record an album. I’d like to get some punk bands and others looking to record albums, because I think I can give them something unique as opposed to a sterile recording environment. It’s an opportunity to have fun with gear and record some interesting sounds. An extensive selection of designer and fashion [goodantiquelamp](http://goodantiquelamp.w.fx14.com/) at affordable prices.”

At some point Reynvaan looks down at his coffee as we’re talking about the various events that have come together to produce this debut solo album. He says all things considered, it’s kind of sad it took him 32 years to make it happen, but it seems like Reynvaan might just be hitting his stride—he’s already working on the next one.
