# Are you ready to be “independent”?

Glad to see you again on my page!

A moment that I always tried to escape from caught me – being independent! I thought I was until I faced true experiences during these 3 weeks at NU in Astana (see picture below). My summer vacation days suddenly turned into busy academic hours, all of which require self-awareness in keeping up with curriculum.

**Choosing my own way**

By the way, this year’s program differentiates in comparison with previous methods used in Foundation Year Program. Truly, it was a bit shock for most of us, since we have to cover all science subjects and humanities simultaneously.

Before entering NU, I chose the School of Engineering as my major for following undergraduate courses, meaning that I don’t have much experience in chemistry and biology! So, I hope that I’ll do well in semester 1. Semester 2 is dedicated to making a summary of what we have learned so far and decide to which school to go.

**Success through self-studies**

Due to hard work and trying to find approaches to tasks by myself, I can achieve my goals, which we outlined in our SMART target paper[1]. You can create it too, find out more here: [http://topachievement.com/smart.html](http://topachievement.com/smart.html)

It also relates to self-motivation, I shouldn’t wait for someone to give me incentives. This is the worst mistake of many students, perhaps!

 

**Crucial advice**

A friend of my brother who studies in the third course of NU gave me useful advice about finishing this year satisfactorily. It was interesting how he managed to use his time wisely, but the answer was simple: “*Do the tasks on time!*” Here are other 3 keys:
- If I have extra time, I should use it for working on assignments even if its deadline is after a week.

- I shall go to classrooms 20 minutes before its start and use that time for repeating previous lectures. Also, it eliminates a risk of coming late, which annoys teachers the most!

- When there’re 2 days left until final assessments, I must feel myself ready

After digesting his suggestions, I created a special schedule (see picture below) to remain organised and avoid wasting my time. It consists of list of tasks that I have to do for each day. It helps me as long as I can see whether there is a progress by ticking on boxes.
