# A. Musakhanov: It is planned to construct 23 small-scale hydropower plants until 2017 in Almaty region

**23 small-scale hydropower plants, 6 wind power plants and 2 solar power plants with the total capacity of 920 megawatt are planned to be built in the region, Governor of Almaty region Ansar Musakhanov told at CCS briefing in Astana.**

As you know, Almaty region is one of the energy deficient regions, however, it has great opportunities for development of renewable energy. About 65% of hydropower resources are located in the region. Over 60 promising sites for construction of small-scale hydropower plants were defined. Powerful wind corridors were found near the Dzungarian Gates and Shelek corridor,” Mr. Musakhanov said.

According to him, presently, 16 hydropower plants with the total capacity of 745 megawatt are functioning in the region. The second line of the Moinak HPP on Charyn River with the capacity of 300 megawatt was launched in 2012 with the participation of the President. As a result, the purchase of energy was reduced from 50 to 39%.

Thus, the share of renewable energy sources increased from 30% in 2011 to 41% this year.

“The Sarkan HPP-2 was reconstructed. The construction of Issyk HPP nears completion. A solar power plant with the capacity of 2 megawatt was put into service in the town of Kapchagai. Totally, 23 small-scale hydropower plants, 6 wind power plants and 2 solar power plants with the total capacity of 920megawatt are planned to be built in the region by 2017. All of the already launched facilities and facilities under construction with the application of renewable energy sources will be presented at the EXPO-2017 in Astana,” the Head of the region resumed.
