Body image Issues in our casual life.

Nowadays many women think about their body and shape. For instance about 50% of all who are sick from bulimia and anorexia - are models. I think that they are anxious about their body image. This problem begins from one global problem such as “Body Image”.

Body image refers to how people see themselves. Distorted body image (also called negative body image) refers to an unrealistic view of how someone sees their body. You begin forming your perceptions of your body’s attractiveness, health, acceptability and functionality in early childhood. This body image continues to form as you age and receive feedback from peers, family member, coaches, etc.  Personality traits such as perfectionism and self criticism can also influence the development of a negative internalized image of your body.

As we know there are several aspects which can influence the image of a body. There are two types of Body Image: positive and negative body images.

Positive Body Image occurs from:

  • A clear, true perception of your shape - you see the various parts ofyour body as they really are.

  • You celebrate and appreciate your natural body shape and you understand that a person’s physical appearance says very little about their character and value as a person.

  • You feel proud and accepting of your unique body and refuse to spend an unreasonable amount of time worrying about food, weight, and calories.

  • You feel comfortable and confident in your body.

Negative Body Image occurs from:

  • A distorted perception of your shape - you perceive parts of your body unlike they really are.

  • You are convinced that only other people are attractive and that your body size or shape is a sign of personal failure.

  • You feel ashamed, self-conscious, and anxious about your body.

  • You feel uncomfortable and awkward in your body.

Relationship Between Weight & Body Image

A normally healthy weight range for an individual can be perceived as overweight by someone with a distorted body image.  An anorexic young woman may look at herself in amirror and see a reflection that is greater than her actual size.  Conversely, it is not uncommon for obese individuals to report that they did not realize they were as large as they are and had perceived their body as much smaller until an occasion arises where they see a photograph, video or window reflection that strikes a nerve and causes them to come to terms with their actual image.

Relationship Between An Eating Disorder & Body Image

Body image concerns and eating disorders go hand in hand.  Often, it is the early dissatisfaction with a young person’s appearance that leads them to conclude that losing weight would enhance their appearance, and make them feel better about themselves and their bodies.  Thus, restrictive eating and over exercising are often next, frequently leading to patterns of disordered eating and weight obsession that can develop into anorexia, bulimia, orthorexia, compulsive overeating or binge eating disorder.

What about celebrities?

Celebrities are popular people and have much money to have ideal body and shape, but they are the same mortal people and they have body image too.

And then to be almost immediately sad again and now ashamed and then to try to hide those feelings with more food,” he said, adding, “I know what it’s like to have body image issues.

Demi Lovato has talked extensively about her struggles with eating disorders. She recounts that as a child she compulsively over-ate, then starved herself after being called fat at school by bullies. Demi speaks of the pressure that she felt to be perfect that contributed to her disorder. She states that she feels the most beautiful when she relaxes without makeup. Blog post image
