Periphrasis, Euphemism, Hyperbole,Understatement (Week 10)

According to I.R Galperin, periphrasis, euphemism, hyperbole, understatement refers to lexical SD and EMs based on the interaction of logical and nominative meanigs. But V.A. Kuharenko refered hyperbole and understatement  to lexical SDs and periphrasis to lexico-syntactic SDs. Talking about Skrebnev`s classification, we can see that  hyperbole and understatement are in the group of paradigmatic semasiology unit (figures of quantity).Kuharenco and Skrebnev do not belong euphemism and periphrasis anywhere. So,

hyperbole came to us from Greek and it means "overshooting"- a deliberate exaggeration of an object feature to such a degree that will show its utter absurdity.

"I'd catch a grenade for ya.
Throw my hand on the blade for ya.
I'd jump in front of a train for ya." (Bruno Mars, song "Grenade")

understatement or meiosis - the exaggeration of smallness.

" She was so thin she could have hidden behind a parking meter."

periphrasis from Greek is "speaking around" - the use of a more or less complicated syntactycal structure instead of one word to convey a purely individual perception of the described object.

"My better half( my wife), the cap and the gown(a student)."

euphemism from Greek is "speaking well" - "whitewashing device" - a word/phrase used to replace an unpleasant or tabooed word/phrase by a conventionally more acceptable, mild, or less straightforward one.

" A woman of a certain type, night butterfly(in Russian) - a prostitute."
