May 17, 49 members of Swainsboro's 810th Engineer Company of the Georgia Army National Guard boarded two CH-47 Chinooks with members of the National Guard Unit from Douglas to attend simulated hurricane reaction exercises. Swainsboro's Guardsmen took part in exercises on Saturday, assisting local emergency services, sheriff deputies and police officers with presence patrols.
Units in South Carolina had a much greater role in the simulation, calling in other National Guard units for assistance as would be done in a real natural disaster or man-made event happening in their area.
Units in the National Guard can be activated federally, such as when the 810th traveled to Afghanistan in 2010, or by governors of each state as part of a state defense force. This training served to emphasize the state defense aspect of the National Guard's dual role.
"Most people may not know what is going on with the National Guard," explained Captain Benjamin Roberts. "We have a dual role to protect citizens both on the state level and the national level. This dual role is unique to the National Guard."
Captain Roberts explained that, though the training members of the 810th participated in was only a piece of the greater simulation, it was important that they practice coordinating with other National Guard units in different areas, and hitting the ground running with minimal information.Scholarship recipients will receive the following elements, intended to cover Ccie lab training from start to finish.
Members of the 810th are constantly training to be prepared for any event in which they will be needed. They will soon head off for extensive training at Ft. Stewart in June.The highlight of my tour was “System Electronica”, the Pcb factory which makes the Arduino PCBs.
