Backsliding

Hi there,

This is Nurlan, a member of MorningCoach.com

I welcome you here at my blod page dedicated to personal development

today we are going to read about Backsliding:

“A man with one watch knows what time it is; a man with two watches is never quite sure.”

-- Lee Segall

What is backsliding? Backsliding is when you stop doing your development basics and you fall backward. If you are doing personal evolution every single day and then stop, that is backsliding. It is actually a Christian term meaning to move away from your faith. You should be doing 30 minutes of personal development every day. When things happen, and you stop doing it, that is backsliding.

Today, I'm going to discuss ideas that will help you stop backsliding and keep you moving forward, whether you stop physical training, mental work or anything else that you should be doing on a daily basis.

Understand faith. The first key is to understand faith. Faith is the belief in something that is unseen or proven. In order to manifest the things that you want in your life, you need to have an amazing faith in yourself and in the belief that you can manifest. This deep commitment is what's going to push you through when challenges start to occur. Having faith can be very practical in that it teaches you to go out and press forward when others don't believe. It also is a metaphysical in that you've got to build a spiritual connection with whatever it is you're trying to manifest.

In order to stop backsliding, it is critical that you have faith, so that when things don't go as planned, you can get right back up and continue progressing forward. Life happens, and there are going to be things that get in the way of you pursuing your dreams. That is all part of life.

Life happens, but don't use that as an excuse. When life happens, you should accept it, you should learn from it, and then you need to move forward. I am OK with your saying, “Well, life happens” when things don't go as planned. However, I don't want you to use that as an excuse over and over again. Life does happen, but don't use it as an excuse not to get back to where you need to be. There are times when you just need to pick yourself up keep moving.

Get back at it. Nike gave us the saying, “Just do it,” and that is the bottom line. Sometimes, you just have to get back at it. Lose the excuses, and get back up on the horse and ride it. If you're trying to learn a new language, and you're not doing the daily work that it takes to learn it, you just have to get back to the daily lessons again. If you haven't been doing the work that you need to do, today is a new day, a fresh start. Get back to it.

Buy new tools, equipment. You may need some motivation to get back at it. One of the things that you can do is to go out and buy some new tools or equipment. I fell back a little bit on my training when I was hurt due to a small injury. That injury turned into an excuse, and I backslid a few months longer in the recovery than I should have. To get back at it, the first thing I did was to go buy a new pair shoes, a new Bluetooth headset and some new apps for my iPhone, all with the purpose of finding some motivation to go out and make it happen. I knew that if I spent cash on things, I would see them and that they would motivate me to get up and get going.

Collect data and set goals. A great way to get more motivation is to set goals and collect data so you can see progress as you move toward those goals. It’s amazing how hard we will work when we see that we're nearing the completion of an objective.

I was reading a recent study in which they gave subjects a punch card for a free coffee with the purchase of 10 coffees. The interesting fact was that as the subjects got closer to the freebie, they would work harder to reach the objective. They also gave some subjects a 12-punch card with two purchases already punched out. What they found was that the people who had cards that were already partially punched worked harder and completed their goals faster than the people starting from zero.

The findings show that if we're seeing progress toward a goal or objective, even if there is no real progress, it is just a mental assumption that we will move faster toward our objective. Set goals and collect data, and watch the progress, because you will move closer and faster toward your objective and stop the backsliding.
