In this regard, Astana hosts international conference “Transition to low-carbon urban development: global trends and prospects for Kazakhstan and Central Asia”.** [!\[08122015\](http://gbpp.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/08122015.jpg)](http://gbpp.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/08122015.jpg) Manager of the UNDP/GEF project on energy efficiency Aleksander Belyi explained some points of the project in an interview with News Agency “Strategy2050.kz”. **Aleksander, tell us about the project and its prospects.** - The UNDP together with authorities of Kazakhstan start a new project supported by the GEF. It is called “Sustainable cities for low-carbon development in Kazakhstan”. The project is designed for 5 years and is intended to assist local agencies to promote the urban infrastructure projects aimed at preventing greenhouse gas emissions. It includes utilities (power, heat, hot water supply systems). **Why these sectors?** - Because it has the greatest impact on the gas emission, following the industry sector. Public sector is not attractive for investment. The objective of our work is to make it more attractive and to promote energy efficiency. **What is low-carbon development?** - Low-carbon development – a concept for economic development without harm or with minimal harm to the environment, namely the global climate. Greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced. This involves various technologies. **Where the project will start, what cities?** - The project will involve 15 cities. As for today, there are 4 cities selected: Shymkent, Taraz, Temirtau, and Lisakovsk. Previously, Kazakhstan has adopted voluntary commitment to prevent greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2020 and 25% – by 2050. **What results are expected?** - Today we have started a conference. The experts are to discuss international experience. We look forward to the speakers from 10 countries. It is expected to sign 4 memoranda with 4 cities. http://gbpp.org/en/2015/12/12749
